In other news, Mercedes and Rolex have decided to close shop citing: "Too many consumers [whores] are purchasing our products as status symbols instead of to drive around and tell time.

Product status symbols have been around since the begining of trading goods. I'm only saying, if you don't want to purchase an ipod, or a pair or er6i, then that's your business. But I reserve the right to poke fun of you if you cite BS trend reasons instead of technical merits or lack there of

That's like going to a car dealer with your wife to buy a vehicle and the sales person asks you: "So, what can I show you? This coupe? How about this convertable? What about this sedan? Ahh, I know, this SUV right here..."

And your wife responds: "Red."

I don't have any white headphones (all at least have black cords), so I've never experienced this. But what does irritate me is people who think the iPod is the only good MP3 player, and everything else is some cheap knock-off. With my Zen Xtra, I always get comments along the lines of "that's a big iPod". Ignorant bastards... I'm curious to see what comments I get now that I spray-painted the Xtra. "Is that a black iPod?"

well... that's what happens when a brand becomes synonymous with a product. it's happened with "Walkman," "Discman," "Kleenex," now it's "iPod" and "mp3 player." you wouldn't meet a person who would say "is that a DAP?" nowadays all DAPs play more that the mp3 format, yet people will still call it an "mp3 player."

You're missing my point--if the iPod fulfills your needs, great! I'm just saying that for many there are different and possibly better options, which for the great majority of music listeners, are never considered.

Further, I'm sure Apple is all for the iPod becoming a status symbol, but I'd love to see more educated consumers. Case in point--in a thread not too long ago here, a guy offered an iPod user some better headphones and he said, "No, the iPod buds are matched for the iPod, the best you can get." Buds and other cans are seperate from the pod, but that mentality remains--"Why use the iRiver or Rio, the iPod is the best there is!" (And if it is for you and many others, great

I don't care if anyone knows if I have an iPod or not as it relates to being a status symbol. I'd rather not let anyone who has sticky fingers know though, and that is why I'll never use any white earphones with my iPod. I like it and I'd like to keep it.

It seems like the iPod might be turning into a generic term. A few months ago a friend of mine said he was going to the store to get an iPod. I was rather surprised, and asked which model. He said something like "one of the Rio 20 GB players". I guess he was just using "iPod" as a generic term for MP3 player. I hadn't realized it had reached that level yet, but then again, maybe it was just my crazy mixed up friend

It's amazing how one simple sentence can establish 3 things about the guy.
Rude, ignorant and stupid.

My girlfriend was buying a new computer last week from Dell. On the customize pages they give you the option to add as Dell DJ as an "accessory". When she saw it she said, "What's that?" I told her it was an mp3 player. She replied, "Why would anyone want to buy a fake iPod?"

It made me smile, but let's be fair here, the iPod is the only DAP with recognizable presence and marketing. To her credit, with all the subway ads for the Zen Micro, she's been asking me, "Is that better than the Mini?"

You're absolutely right.

But blame and under educated, lazy and apathetic consumer market who don't do their own research.

Or blame the marketing geniuses at Apple.

Either way, the iPod sells just as much on technical merit, as it does for trendiness. Trendy status symbol or not, it's still one of the (if not the) best portable digital audio players on the market.

My friend got a new iPod mini which I was really impressed with to say the least. They've crammed a mini 4 gig HD in there along with all of that circuitry and the cool scroll wheel implement. Impressive device. Anyway, I asked him why he was using the stock iPod buds and he said "yeah...I gotta get some better ones". I knew I could expect better from my fellow musicians. w00t!

Since I got my iPod this past Saturday, I have left behind the stock iPod buds inside the box. I have already known better than to use such great-looking but mediocre-sounding stock 'phones on a potentially superior-sounding portable player.

Besides, I use black headphone and/or headphones with black cords with my iPod. Why? Because my iPod, though it is white to begin with, is actually housed in a black belt pouch, making it black-and-white.

There, see? You're just trying to make it match and be stylish!

Eh, but the real reason why I purchased that black-colored belt pouch is to protect my white iPod from scratches. The black color just happens to be incidental.

thats why i don't use ety's anymore. Whenever someone asks you a dumb question, you end up having to pull them out, then re-inserting them meanwhile wanting to hack up the person who asked you a question.

It's even better when they pull out your canalphones themselves.
