K701 is very demanding to macht properly with an amp. I own Heed Canamp that drives really good K701. Now I'm planing buying a valve headphone amplifier. Which one to chose? I live in Portugal-Europe so American amplifiers are out of question because they will pay heavy Costume Taxes. Please helpe me to chose a matching valve amplifier to my K701.

It is pricey, but has a lot of tube options, small footprint and if you search for Earmax threads you will find that it is well thought of. I believe Head - Fier Anders has K701 and Earmax SE combo too and he is pretty happy with it.

The Darkvoice amps would have to be imported from outside the EU (China), and you would also have to pay taxes like in the US case.

Unless your considering a used amp from a fellow Head-Fi'er in the EU.

What are you looking to spend?

I've used the x-can v3 with great success on the 701. It's a british amp so maybe you could get it cheaper there.

I've also used the Darkvoice 337 which does a great job.

I have 2 "valve" amps: MAD Ear+ HD and SP MPX3 Slam SE. I have no problems driving the AK 701s. It is true that with an OTL amp, you need to turn the gain up a little higher for low impedance headphones, but not a lot on my SP. I use the 701s with all tube combinations at high and low power output settings. Since I like realistic and natural sound, I far prefer the K-701s to any other reasonably priced set of head phones.

The hybrid SS-tube EF-1 from Head-Direct sounds great with my 701's.

(As long as you use a good old 12AU7, not the supplied modern Chinese one).

It's another China solution, but Head-Direct is an expert at shipping all over the world.

I use a DarkVoice 332 with my K701s, and I'm very pleased with the combination. I think the 332 is a big step-up from the 336 I had previously and is worth the extra price. When I use my K701s I find it hard to choose between my GS-1 and my 332. I think the 332 is very good value for money for the sound quality if offers.
