That's the way I feel, too. But here's a few alternatives to what has been posted already:

Rolling Stones - Exile on Main Street or Sticky Fingers or Some Girls

The Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground & Nico or VU

Neil Young - After the Gold Rush or Tonight's the Night or Rust Never Sleeps

The Pretenders - The Singles

Television - Marquee Moon

R.E.M. - Document

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

Nirvana - Nevermind

For some more energetic music:

System of a down - Toxicity
The white stripes - Icky thump

And if I could call Tool rock... Well, I still recommend Tool - Lateralus.

All pink floyd is good too, my favorites are; The wall, Dark side of the moon and animals.

Some really good recommendations here, for a start though, I will look at the list posted by DavidMahler, its very varied, and you can pick out sub genre's that you like the most from a random list of super albums like that.

Yea good recommendations so far. My favourite rock album at the moment is the self titled Temple Of The Dog album.

Best thing to do though I think as rock is so broad is to look through these lists:

classic rock tag – Music at Last.fm
hard rock tag – Music at Last.fm
rock tag – Music at Last.fm

you can click on the artists and listen to them. The quality differs but most is good enough to show you what the artist sounds like.

Once you have found one or two artists you like then you can look at similar artists etc. Its a good site to find music

I'm just chiming in again.......... while I agree that almost all the suggestions listed are excellent albums. If your familiarity with rock music is almost none, then start yourself with the big Five bands.... The Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Floyd and the Who.

And the big Five artists....... Dylan, Springsteen, Clapton, Hendrix and Bowie

Queen and Neil Young get honorary mentions here.

The Allman Brothers with Duane Allman was, in my opinion, the best guitar band ever. Some say blues, some say rock. Who cares. Start with the Deluxe Edition of "Eat a Peach," which also contains a whole disk of live Fillmore cuts. Wonderful guitar work from Dickey Betts and Duane Allman.

My favorite rock album at the moment (and over many years) has to be the Rolling Stones' "It's only Rock and Roll" Everyone will always point to Exile on Mainstreet or Sticky Fingers but I always feel half bored listening to those albums, maybe because "Exile" so long and "Sticky" is very back and forth mellow/rock. I really think "It's only Rock and Roll" is the best Stones album from start to finish. Keeps up a great pace and sounds fantastic. My top Stones album for sure. Don't miss it.

For guitar work, Stevie Ray Vaughn gives a good presentation as well. So does Alvin Lee, Leslie West & Frank Marino. Just throwing out guitar styles from the 70s, not "must haves" for building rock Classics.

Let me add Carlos Santana.
