My roxannes are on their way from the JH...however for what its worth Im totally satisfied with the Calyx M!  It does prefer on what kinda sound signature you prefer but I do find the calyx to be exteremely detailed, yet a touch of nice warmness.  Having listened to the ak240, I would say its quite close in terms of overall SQ...although the AK brings out a few extra details and sparkle to my ears.  Im also coming from iphone 3g, dx50, dx90 previously...paired with westones mainly (latest es5's).  To my ears a step up in source does present more of the details and rendition of the music.  AS soon as my rox's arrive, ill post again.

hi there, I just saw this thread - I'm pairing my Roxanne's with the Oppo HA-2 running Tidal HD tracks on my iPhone 6, and the sound is fantastic. The HA-2 adds a wider soundstage and some more sparkle to the top end. Could be another option to consider vs buying a DAP.

I use my Roxanne Universal with an A&K Balanced cable from the AK240 or AK120 II. With the bass dial at 10:00, it really reminds me of the LCD2.2. Sounds very headphone-like.

I personally cannot tell the difference between the various lossless formats including AIFF, FLAC, or ALAC (apple Lossless) and have all three in my collection. However, hopelessly entangled in the apple ecosystem too and using iTunes to rip my CDs, I chose to default on aiff simply because I have no space issue so why not.

That's how it should be. Lossless means no loss, so the digital output from decoding is identical for all lossless formats of the same resolution.

As for the OP question, I just read an opinion elsewhere that HiFiMan 901 is the ultimate - and you can change the amplifier card. I must admit I have not tried it myself yet.

I know this is an old thread but I just received Roxanne Universal from a fellow head-fier and it's awesome with an Onkyo DP-X1.  Only been listening for a couple of hours yet but this is a pretty big improvement over my faithful Etymotic ER4s.  I tried a FiiO X5 mk1 and an iBasso DX80 and they both had their issues; poor UI, the X5 actually stuttered with hires files.  The Onkyo is the best of all worlds so far; awesome and familiar Android UI, tons of power for IEMs and dual DACs!  Two MicroSD slots is the gold standard of storage capacity.  The battery seems ok, i can get about 8 hours on SE with hires music.

I'm running the stock SE cable and am getting my Moon Audio Black Dragon balanced cables tomorrow so I'll update later.
