I bought a good pair of UL Metro Fi's for myself when Amazon dropped the price to 25 bucks, but now I need a pair for a younger brother of mine and see no deals in sight.

Can anybody recommend something that you would give to a kid who would probably destroy them within a years time yet have decent sound?

Out of all the $30ish ones I tried from the local store I was most impressed by JVC FX66 Air Cushions and on Amazon I they are even cheaper.

Ideally, the Maximo Im-590. They can take a whole bunch of abuse and sound great. Come with a 2-year warranty, too.

If you want really disposable, the Soundmagic PL30 or Meelectronics Ai-M9 will do fine and can be had for like $20 shipped.

May I suggest the AKG K330?

For the average listener/ player it is a true mirracle!

Great sounding and comfortabe. Very light and they have a great pouch with them. Finally the tips are silicon and not plastic. Nowdays they sell for roughly half their introductory price!

oh! did I stress GREAT sounding enough???

My teenage kids like the PL30's. Seem to be holding up well.

PL30s seem to be universally liked. I far prefer them to the CX300s and most other things in the price range (except Ai-M9). I still say the Maximos will hold up better, but not many people here have tried them.

This question is a bit of a trick question. given the sheer amount of phones in this price range. there is no best, or really even one that is arguably all that great imo, but they will all sound different.
