Which 6922 tubes to use? What's good?

I have some JAN Phillips 6922's that I think are excellent, and they can be had for a reasonable price for a NOS tube.

That said, I have no doubt the Amperex Bugle Boys are the bomb - I have all BB's in my ASL amp (EL84/12AX7), and they are by far the best tubes I have ever owned.

I can understand that, I think it really boils down to our perception/hearing.

I've always found that the Sovteks sound a little bit too strident in the highs for me when compared to the EH's. It really does depend on what the individual hears and is comfortable with. I also like the NOS Jan-Philips 6922 in my Audio Research pre-amp too, but didn't like the way they sounded in the Musical Fidelity X-Cans V2 but that is more about design of the amp and synergy rather than a good or bad sounding tube per se.

Would love to have Bugle Boys, but finding 4 of them at the right price is the challenge !

Price should be OK, but the matching process is a tough thing.

Jan Phillips are very nice and not to expensive. Another option would be Russian 6H23-EB, currently that is what I have on my Musical Fidelity X-Can V2.

how would EH or Amperex tubes compare to JJ? I currently just finished building my Bijou and am considering some tube swapping.

Hugz,

My vote is for the Telefunkens is $$ permit or JJ (very nice sounding indeed) or Amperex Bugle Boys otherwise.

Cheers,
Garry

it currently uses electroharmonix 6922EH, but it's time to upgrade.

What tubes would you guys suggest as a replacement for my EHs?

I've had good luck with the Russian stuff. The 6n23p-EB sound great and the 6n1p-eb(if your amp can run them)are even better.

Those are not 6922/6dj8s. So, umm. yeah.

Russian sovtek 6922s are terrible. I found them to be very grainy and flat.

x2. The EH 6922's are OK, but the NOS JAN/Phillips I got are SO much better sounding.

Got a pair of Amperex 6922 PQ (gold pin, orange label, made in US) for Woo2.

When I had the Woo3, upgrading from stock to Amperex Bugle Boys was a nice and cheap upgrade.
