Whether 600 or 650?

I love my HD600s for soft rock. They are excellent cans.

Maybe I jumped the gun, bought I bought a pair of 650's for $330 on Amazon. Just a few days ago I bought a Stefan Art e-series cable, and James (the proprietor) suggested several mods to the 650 that really open them up. I guess I'll be doing surgery on Monday when they arrive. I previously owned 600's so I thought I'd try something new.

There is also a difference between "new" HD650 and "old" HD650. So its a choice between three variants.

Can I use HD600 (without amp) with Sony X series?
Have any 1 tried before?

Both the HD600s and HD650s need an amp, there has never been any question about it. I've listened straight out of my laptop and iPod, they just sound flat and lifeless. You need something with a decent amount of power to get them to sing.

I agree that you should try to listen to both; your ears and preferences are what counts. While both are excellent cans, I prefer the 650 over the 600 for the jazz that I listen to. I find it more refined with fabulous mids.

So if the OP's genres are more HD600-leaning what genres work better on the HD650? Or is it just a matter of general sound signature frequency balance?

i think the hd650 does better when more bass is needed.. like rap/r&b/trance/etc

but the difference is relatively small imo, especially out of a decent source/amp
