The HD555's are solid. I have a pair of dt880's and dr150's and I doubt I will ever sell my 555s.

Thing is...a lot of people keep their low level Grado's like the SR60's. Not too sure what you mean. If you've been here long enough, you'd realize they are one of the best bang for the buck headphones. Hence the appreciation thread. I for one, even found the 595 a poor performer compared to any of my other headphones. Alas, there is an appreciation thread for almost all headphones regardless.

I don't get your point. I was responding to a poster who stated that people get rid of the 555s because they find a better sounding headphone. It is extremely easy to find a better sounding set of cans than the sr60s yet there is an appreciation thread.

More people own the sr60s so more people will keep them. On the other hand more people sell them for the same reason. I have been reading this forum for a while and there is always a pair of sr60s for sale in the F/S forum.

For all their flaws the 555s, at least for me, convey emotion extremely well especially with soul, r&B, and contemporary country. That is what I appreciate about them.

Just like you didn't get my point, I didn't get your point. I was responding to the fact that he said they get rid of 555's because they don't like them, and I thought you refuted by saying the same for SR60's so there should be no appreciation thread. That is not the case with SR60's. There is no pair of SR60's for sale is there right now? I can't find one. All are sold.

Regardless I'm not against 555's having their own appreciation thread. Not like I'm going to follow it

Maybe the SR60's are just appreciated a lot more since their appreciation thread has 60+ pages

Maybe the sr-60's gives a true taste to Grado's high end version, and the HD555 sounds like crap compared to their high end version? Sold mines and haven't regretted it. ( DUH )

Again with the vitriolic hatred and the bombastic statements.
The grado thread having a ton of pages doesn't mean that the sr60 is a better headphone, or even a good one. It just proves that people buy the same stuff as other people, good or otherwise.

An iPod appreciation thread would likely be even longer.

Ok, i got a chance to listen to HD555's last week. They are actually pretty good. Does exceptionally well for some genre's (Alison Krauss comes to mind). Im still leaning towards Grado's but my opinion might could be rather biased as im quite used to the brightness and the liveliness of grados.

I've kept mine because their limitations make the very effective for certain music: i.e. the infamous 'veil'.
I play a lot of old computer games, old PC, Amiga, ST, Spectrum etc. The HD555s ultra bland but warm presentation makes the often harsh sound of these old games perfectly bearable.
Same goes for very rough sounding lofi or live recordings.

One thing that the HD555 cannot be faulted for is it's excellent soundstage, best in it's price range IMO.

A buddy of mine bought a pair of 555s for computer gaming a year or two ago. I played through Portal recently in one sitting with them and decided right there and then to get a pair of Sennheisers. I would have bought that very model had they been sealed, but I'm happy with my 280 pros and somewhat afraid that I'm started down a very addictive new hobby...

The problem is that the HD595's are so much better for a relatively small increment in price.

you can get B-stock (customer returns, usually like new) 555's for about $80, while same condition 595's are generally over $120.... might as well pay a little extra and go for the 580. Not that I really like the 580 sound, but it is a lot easier to resell than the 595
