Westone was the developer and manufacturer of the Shure E1 and E5 for Shure until late 2002. Production was moved to Mexico at that time by Shure. In 2003 the UM2 was released (an updated and modified version of the original E5 we developed).
I would say going past this level, you want custom molds.
Are all earmolds permanent? If not, I would think that sure the resale value is a little less, because you have to pay for new molds, but I bet people would still pay for them as long as the molds can be replaced with new earmolds, minus the cost of the custom molds.
Heck I'd be interested in buying some ES-2s or the like at a discount since I'd have to get earmolds made anyways.
