and does it sound better than the current version of the ipod classic?

It's very rare to find a product that was sold three years ago brand new and un--opened. I am not aware of any places at all that sell new iPod 5.5gs.
As for sounding better than the newer classic it's debateable. I'm of the opinion that it beats the 7th gen Classics hands down but others say otherwise.
The biggest advantage of the 5/5.5g is Rockbox, the Wolfson DAC and the ability to put in a 240gb HDD.
