Im interested to see what you guys do or think is the correct way to fine tune your volume. This is implying you are using a computer as a source.

Do you:
Leave system volume and media player volume up all the way and adjust only the amp?

System volume up all the way set amp and fine tune with media player?

Some other combination?

Just wondering the general consensus here. I personally do the first one.

I use the first option, and always believed that it's the correct way. I may be wrong though.

Jan Meier recommends the first for the Corda Symphony, so I do that.

Adjust volume at the external amplifier, everything else at 100%.

I generally set all the digital sources to max (unless I get clipping). Intermediate controls I usually point to 80%. Most of the volume tweaking is done at the last amp.

Right now I'm using WASAPI and it seems to bypass both the Fubar2k and the Windows volume control, so I'm effectively doing #1 as well so far as I can tell.

It depends on battery power. For best sound , i turn the player 80% to full and adjust the amp......but if the player is losing battery power and i wont be home for awhile, i may turn the player low and turn up the amp and switch to easy to drive IEMs.

I use my amp's control and sometimes the volume control in my squeezebox software. With the Alessandro I need a little bit more control on my amp so I turn the volume down a little. With my Beyers I leave my output at 100%.

Kernel Streaming bypasses all volume controls in Media Monkey, Kmixer and Creative, so all volume is controlled at the Compass. The only pre DAC processing I use in the digital domain is the Shibatch Super Equalizer as a DSP plug in, I guess I could control the volume there.
