What's wrong with the iPod Touch?

That is very probable... because I listen mostly to Jazz and Jazz Rock / Fusion... The bass (base) is quite entertaining there... I'm probably a basshead anyway... whatever makes me happy, right?

I agree that the sony s639 is a nice player, but it is not any nicer than the iPod touch 2g, just different flavours... i also had the s639 and enjoyed it, but it was less pleasing to my me than some other players. the 828 is a good player too, but too hissy. the x000 is a great player too, but id rather havea smaller player with a small screen and a good audio circuit.

Well, the 1G Touch is horrible SQ. I Never tried the 2G so I can't say anything about that, only that it has no EQ. Why would I pay 200$ for the same device I already bought once... and risk the disappointment. And I never read anywhere about the 3gpod stellat SQ. The S639 had great reviews... but this is about the ipod. Mine sucks!

Auditioning the Touch is a pain in the rear - I couldnt find a store where someone had taken the time to put some tunes on a demo unit. Sony and Samsung have a selection of tracks on their players - much smarter move, IMO.

EQ in 2G iPod ? it is there, or you are talking about ZUNE ?

Nothing is wrong with iPod Touch ... i got 1st gen. and i sold it when 2nd gen. was out ... SQ is similar ...

Apple stores in UK are full of demo units but you never know what bitrate music are on them.

As to people not knowing any better!

I've had a S638 and currently still have an A829.

I tried the Touch when it came out & also thought it sounded weak with little bass so didn't buy.

When the 2nd gen came out the SQ improved significantly and with the 3G Touch things have slightly improved again. The Touch now sounds as good as my A829 which many say is better SQ than the 6 series Walkmans.

Think most people slagging off the Touch are anti-Apple or have only tried 1G Touch.

I'm also suprised when people say the 1G sounds same as 2G. Unless the 1G's SQ improved with a firmware update.

1st Gen and 2nd Gen Touch have completely different DAC chips : Apple dumped Wolfson for Cirrus Logic. For all that, I'm not overly surprised that some claim there is little difference - we've seen similar claims in relation to headphone upgrades here many times. Neither side is right or wrong - if it sounds better to you, then great : we make a big deal of the power of placebo and expectation, but everything in audio is subjective for mine.

Personally, I am trying really hard to wean myself off a lot of the Sony EQ - initially it was very attractive, but its so easy to overdo it with so many possible combinations.

Even with all the tweaking I can do on My A829 (even with custom EQ), I still use it with all the bells & whistles off. Comparing this to my 64GB 3G Touch with my SE530's, they both sound excellent with very little difference (except the hiss with the Walkman).

What isn't as good is Bluetooth. I like to wear my Sony Ericsson DS980 bluetooth earphones when out walking the dog/exercising which are excellent sound quality for BT and sound amazing with the Walkman A829 with all the controls working. With the Touch, the sound is too bass heavy and only volume and play/pause work.

Also, I discovered the game Peggle yesterday. Wore the battery out in one sitting! Was on it hours though

My 2G iPod Touch is as good if not better than my Sony A818. They sound slightly different. I prefer the controls of the Sony, but I think I prefer the sound of the Touch. The Sony might be better for dance, rock, the touchfor acoustic, classic. The sony is more fun, the touch more accurate.

The touch is more than a MP3 player. Its a mini computer too. Which means I'm always running the battery down doing other things on it. Kids like it for games, and I check my email on it, and the news. Sometimes youtube.

I miss having a FM tuner on both though.

Have no problem at all controlling the Touch..................Because I don't touch it most of the time! (especially when out & about)

I bought the Shure iPhone mic/remote adapter a while back which gives me play/pause and FFW/BKW with just a click, just like the crappy Apple remote earphones that come with a 3G Touch.

Doesn't have volume control on it but I use Sound Check feature so volume is consistant from song to song anyway. Ideal being able to operate the Touch from the headphone cable once I've chosen the Playlist/Album/Artist I want to listen too.

No trouble for me regarding an FM radio tuner & camera as I only use a PAYG phone which already has those built in anyway (decided to miss the iPhone for now).

Can't understand why anyone would want a Touch anyway if their only intersted in a pure music player.

Listening to music with the Touch 1G is possible only for minutes without a hurting ear. May be it is because it's "accurate". Well, Apple can keep its accuracy. When I am listening to music, I'd like to enjoy it. If that includes using the manual EQ (and it does) then I want manual EQ. The Beyer headphones are accurate too, top of the line... however just to enjoy music you are much better off with other brands like a Sennheiser. Like when you look at a painting you don't care what canvas or paint was used (analitical) you just want to enjoy what the artist painted. The SONY has their share the music destroying tweaks (like the dynamic equalizer or surround sound) however the EQ is a marvel of engineering.

Because its sounds good. Better then many "pure" music players.
