This thread has really exploded, I'm so happy! I wanted it as mostly an excuse to find new music for myself. And you all have helped me to succeed admirably.  Which also should probably help others find new music as well. Good times

I am not surprised that Mike Patton and Devin Townsend have come up multiple times. lol.

Also I wouldn't give anyone grief for mentioning Bjork or Tool. Bjork can definitely do some odd stuff, especially considering what she does with her voice (very unconventional styles of singing) and with Tool... Well, they essentially combine the raw anger of hard rock with spirituality, so I understand if someone doesn't "get it". It bums me out, because I love Tool, but they are definitely unique. They have songs describing the lowest lows to the highest highs, and the style of the music (aggressive to melodic) follows suit. Totally understandable that some people wouldn't get into that.

Neurosis, Deathspell Omega and Strapping Young Lad are some of my favourite bands, they can get very 'out there'.

Ohhhh god I love SYL. I can never decide if I like Alien or The New Black better.  I mean, Alien is so crazy, which I love, but TNB has a lot of really beautiful crafted songs that just have great metal energy.

Digging that video link, by the way.

To these western ears, a lot of eastern music sounds weird. Beautiful, but weird.

Along those lines would be traditional African music I think.  It seems to focus on the voice itself without regard for what we think of here as harmony and melody. The percussion is also a different approach. I don't dislike it, but it is definitely a departure from what our music industry embraces.

Some fun music stuff, check it out:
[Edit: I've changed them to hyperlinks because having 17 embedded videos made the page lag very badly. LAME]

40 minutes of the digits of Pi turned to tones. Download it instead, the MIDI sounds way better than the video. I don't know why.

I can't remember the name of the band, but they were one of the opening acts for a Boris (a Japanese band) concert here last year in San Francisco.  They were some kind of psychadelic prog band, and one of the members played a saxophone attached to effects peddles, producing some of the strangest sounds I've heard from an instrument.

If you ever find this band, please post here. Electrically amplified instruments that were never designed to be amplified is one of my favorite things.

I think this is made weirder by the primitive CG animation. Also I'm surprised YouTube allows penises. Maybe only if they're digital, lulz.

Not sure if it's the weirdest but it's pretty strange industrial.

Played on 400 speakers at spacial locations at the 1958 Worlds Fair. People ran out!

The piece was originally recorded on three separate mono tapes, two of which were in turn recorded onto a stereo tape with panning effects. The stereo tape and the remaining mono tape were finally combined onto 35-mm perforated tape in order to synchronize the tape with the film and lighting changes.

Maybe not the weirdest, but still weird. Midori (or ミドリ - don't confuse with the violinist).
From last.fm:
"Their sound is a mixture of jazz and hardcore punk mostly, with diverse vocals ranging from baby-pop melodies to insane screams and growls."

Pretty much Punk/HC mixed with Avant-Garde Jazz with some Pop added. Fluidly going from sweet vocals to maniacal screams. Same with music. It's hard to find bands doing it that well IMO.

Don't know the song, can't listen ATM, dunno if it's representative but I don't see much of them on YT...
