I haven't read about much that has been done to the K701 besides some folks who have re-cabled. I know it's supposed to be a pain to take apart, but I'm curious if anybody has attempted more extensive mods (focused on altering sound rather than comfort), playing with the driver or housing or anything.

Probably the one that got modified for double-entry and painted black.

I modded the drivers, pads, housing, cable and headband on mine:

Is that an AKG 701 driver in a Sennheiser enclosure? Is that just a comfort thing or does it improve the sound? It definitely got rid of AKG's distinctive "bump" in the middle of the can.

QQQ mentioned a mod that had you remove or poke holes in a membrane on the back of the AKG 701 drivers which is the most extreem mod I know of. Hopefully my next AKG mod will be a recable job by Fidelity Audio so I can use them with my balanced amp.

I replaced each part with a corresponding one from a K-501. It sounded progressively better after each step, but most significantly after the K-501 drivers went in.
