Whats the best ipod speaker dock?

Personally I don't think dock is good (though I hear Audioengine is good). There are some reasons. First, you do not need a dock to make your portable to sound good. You simply need a good interconnect. Second, their sound quality is limited because of its stylish outlook and size. Left and right speakers are binded together and so you cannot expand the range of listening. Third, you have to pay an extra amount to buy an over-priced product. Most of them simply borrow the goodwill of those portable-players' brands and then mark up the price of their own products.

Though I heard Bose dock sounds not bad, but its quality is below its price level.

Hmm, so I have a new choice, the audioengine or the m-audio? The audioengine are made for an ipod, plus they look better, but what about the sound quality difference? Plus the audioengine are about £100 cheaper which is nice...

the m-audio's look pretty nice. i'm going to go try and audition those. they go a tad lower and higher but otherwise seem pretty similar. I've no idea if they are as fun sounding. I really enjoy the audioengine's.

My friend and I have compared them vs. his linn system connected to pretty solid speakers and we think mine sound every bit as good with a radio shack cable from a mac mini. I'm debating trying higher end sources but cant decide if it's worth it...

I wonder whether you have had a chance to compare your audioengine A5 against a Trends TA-10 amp running bookshelf speakers?

I've not.

If you compare with M-Audio BX8A to Audioengine 5, then I would say BX8A is better than Audioengine 5, in terms of sound quality. BX8A is a pair of crazy speakers which will stun your brain. However, if you wanna drive your ipod and also use them with your computer, Audioengine 5 offers your more convenience since it has ipod dock and is inexpensive.

If you want portable I believe the Altec Lansing IM7 (boom box) blows away Bose sound dock along with any others in the 300 dollar range and I paid like 149 on amazon.

Great Bass and seperate controls for both bass and treble.

The only downside is the volume control is a touch pad style and is kinda a pain to do small adjustments.

Other than that this thing cranks!

You can find it even less from other sites but I trust amazon!

If you're going for SQ only, it is without a doubt the Klipsch iFi. The satellites are just their reference RSX3, with a special design 10" subwoofer. Not really for near-field listening though, this thing was meant to fill up a room.

These were going for $200 (half of retail) on Costco.com recently, and I've seen them sell for $100 (!!) on the head-fi forums. Absolutely worth even the retail price IMO.

If I wanted to add a turntable and radio to it, what would be a good amplifier to do so which is fairly inexpensive, however I don't want it to not be good.

If you went with the Audioengine 5's you dont need an amp, maybe a pre-amp for the turntable only (not too sure about that, haven't tried it yet). Otherwise just plug 'em in (radio, cd player, dvd, tape deck... whatever), and you will be feeding them a clean line level signal. You can connect them with an rca to 1/8" cable. The Audioengine 5's have two inputs, and if you need/want more I am sure you could find a splitter or two that would allow you to hook up all your toys.
