What's more important: Musicality or Detail?

I'd take musicality. What's the good of being able to hear everything if it doesn't sound good?

If I have a pair of phones that have a ton of detail, like AKG K701s with the pads removed, the sound can be sterile and distinctly unmusical, though it may have pretty harmonies. If I have a pair of phones with flat treble and boomy bass, it will impossible to listen to no matter how good the music is.

That said, having both detail and musicality is the only only one I'd pick. Look at it from the standpoint of spending money, and see how quickly you say, "Both."

Not really, it is a part of it IMO, but there is headphones and speakers especially that can be very detailed but don't have the timing and speed, which makes the music messy and irritating to listen to, this is not musical to me, I like something that is good at both, D2000

Well OK, I'll concede that point to you.
Equipment can not be overlooked!
