It seems like manufacturers sometimes sacrifice one of these to focus more on the other.

So which is more important to you?

when i say musicality, i mean the tonality of the headphone, the frequency response, the balance, the way it feels

Tough question. For me, both are really just as important, although it depends on source content.

Yeah, both are very important. A headphone must have both to be a true winner. That said I picked detail, just because that's my main case for buying expensive headphones when people want me to explain why.

Music should have musicality as a high priority.

I voted 'niether' as there was no both-option... the thing I like most about the MS2i's sound character is the balance it strikes between being analytical and musical and for me it succeeds at both at the same time

The two are not mutually exclusive, but id pick musicality on the basis that a headphone with a lot of musicality and little detail is okay, whereas one with a lot of detail and no musicality is no fun.

I'll choose details over musicality. Musicality means often than not that music is colored. Coloration (KSC75) makes things monontonous after a while. You're basically listening to the same coloration over & over & over again. Details makes things more dynamic, IMO.

well i ask because i was looking through some old threads about hd650 vs hd600 and found some people saying that they prefer the better detail of the hd650 over the better tonality of the hd600.

I dont want this to turn into another sennheiser debate. I was just surprised by this preference so i wanted to see what most people thought here....

seems like most prefer musicality. or tonality, if that is a better term for it.

The music itself makes it musical. The gear makes it detailed. When the gear isn't detailed, the overall experience is branded as "musical synergy" because the n the music is the main focus. When the gear is up to par with the music, it is called "detailed." When the gear supersedes the music. . . well I only know of one member here to which that applies
