I went from an Aiwa mini-compo to a Denon DM7 system. That is the most improvement made in a single step. The second largest step would be going from a Sennheiser 490 and other earphones to a AKG 501.

After that, all upgrades like new sources, amp, headphones and cables are only minor upgrades IMHO.

I guess my most radical change was a few years back when I made MD my recording format of choice and crap-canned about 20-odd years worth of cassette equipment and tapes.

yep, MD recording is the way to go. my sister used a sound producer on her short film that just walked around with a boom mike and a MD recorder - and the sound turned out great! plus, me hears that the bootleggers likey...

Yeah, MD is really great for mobile recording purposes - when I worked at NPR, the standard issue recording kits are MD recorders with omni mics and Senn HD202s as cheap monitors (when you're recording voices speaking, you don't need *that* hi-fi monitoring). Some of the reporters still use DATs, but MDs are just so much easier to work with.

Most radical change...

Does stock - G54LP coutn as a change? Well, in fitment and looks, it was the most radical. I mean, the PX100 and 200's were pretty soft on the eyes compared to the shiny G54's sucked in sound (actualy, they aren't that bad, but no bass and bad highs make them sound boring), but were pretty much a million times better than buds, though I had nice packaged Pihlips Buds.

Due to my cheapness, it's probably going to be my next set of purchases:
-Sony SA1000
-Entempo Spirt 20GB
-Chaintech AV710
-Z-Audio Epsilon

The biggest change before this was getting my ER6i's, which I had nothing like before owning them.

MBQuart QuartPhone 160

I wanted to buy some sony plugs when the seller recommended me to think of getting MBQuarts. That was the only time I really was feeling the audio WOW. R10, L3000, PS-1 and other giants are much better, but I don't think I'll have that WOW effect again.
