why exactly are these headphones so great and can you still purchase them from koss.com? I only have some sr-60's and i need some portable headphones. One more thing, do they leak huge amounts of sound like the grados?

There are a great many threads that have been devoted to the KSC-35s and why people like them. This topic has been covered ad nauseum. Simply do a search, and you'll find all that you need to know about head-fiers opinions on this matter.

These phones have only recently become available from Koss again.

The KSC-35's are great for portable use while the SR60's are better for home use. KSC-35's don't leak near as much as the SR60's. Comparatively, I like both headphones about the same but for different reasons. They both have their flaws and advantages. I think the SR60's are more hi-fi sounding but you can't ignore the immense fun factor of the KSC-35's. They're very comfy, small and compact...you can carry them around in your pocket just fine. I don't think you'd regret getting them.

That work?

I think Koss was truly surprised by the response they got when they began selling them again. They actually ran out of some components and had to make some more. I was on their site yesterday and they are still listed as available.

that;s quite ridiculous. pulling out such a hot selling items from their production list.
I believe they should just colour the ksc-35 silver if they want to, but still stick with the ergonomics of the it, instead of replacing it with ksc-50.

Speaking of whatsup with the KSC-35. The picture on the website shows them with a nickel-plated plug, mine came with a gold-plated one? anyone else have this? Also my little koss carrying bag doesn't have the Koss logo and it has draw string closure instead of the velcro flap?!?(i think) on the website. anyone else have these anomolies?

The 3 different times I purchased KSC-35s they each came with different carrying cases; a fold-over nylon pouch with velcro w/logo, the same w/out logo and a pleatherette pouch with drawstring and no logo. Also, one of the three pairs labels each phones left/right, the other two don't.

No big deal really. I'd rather have the drawstring bag anyway although it's odd that it doesn't have the Koss logo on it like my Portapro bag. The L/R markings are sort of pointless since there's only one way to put these phones on. So no big loss

MagusG-

I doubt the things you mentioned are anomolies. The 35's I got from Koss last week are exactly as you described.

From a business perspective, Koss did the right thing by resuming production of the 35's to meet a real demand. Unlike most others here, I find I prefer my KSC 50's due to comfort & sound. The 35's have too much bass for my tastes & they seem to pinch my ears after 30 min or so.

On a related note:

from this "new stock" of KSC-35s
I've purchased 2 sets and in each of these sets
I've noticed a faint and occasional rattle.

Has anyone else experienced this ?

Rattle, eh? Does this occur at a specific point in certain pieces of music, or randomly?

I just got my new pair in the mail today, and don't notice a rattle of any sort. Some pinching on my ears from the headphone clips themselves, but no audible problems.

The website listed them as available on May 7th when I placed the order and got an email that said they were available for immediate shipment, but it took me nearly two weeks to get them (customer service told me they ran out of parts).

Moreover, they came with 2 right ear clips installed (I can still put one on my left ear but it's a pain so they are going to mail me a left-clip).

Mine doesn't rattle either. I was used to Porta Pros so much that I felt like there was no bass. I put a bass heavy subwoofer test tune to verify the bass indeed was there. It sounded just fine, so I suppose the Porta Pros have a lot louder bass than the ksc 35s.

They sounded a little clearer than both my Porta Pros and Senn HD497s, but the 497 seems to have a better soundstage and directional sound feels better when gaming.

Pretty amazing for $30.

rattle? I've noticed degradation of sound at higher levels, but that's also a problem with the iPod's headphone out - an amp helps out.

i have a rattle on mine but i dont think they were there when i bought them. only on left side and only at on volumes playing things like bass tests.

also remember new owners to try with different/no pads and see how you like em.

I've seen a few people note a "rattle" with the KSC/Porta line -- and most ended up being a piece of lint or hair on the drivers. Take off the pads and make sure there's nothing on the driver
