Best to tell us what you like/don't like about the M50x, and what you would like to improve/keep the same. Talk about bass, treble, mids, clarity, and soundstage.

I went from ATH-M50s to HiFiMan HE-400's. Then returned the HE-400's because they sounded horrible even after break-in (probably defective) and went with AKG-K702s. But you'll need a more robust amp for the AKG's.

Electronic music is a small % of what I listen to, but the K702s sound incredible when I play Daft Punk, Tiesto, etc. I'm using  a Schiit Lyr 2 and Bifrost with Uber Analog upgrade, so tons of power and a pretty awesome DAC is a big part of that.

I Preferred the Hifiman HE400 speed and bass slam over the Akg's...they have a more natural bass.

Bump. So far I have the Grado hemp and the 58x and the m50x seems to deliver the bass/slam/punch I truly enjoy to where I can really get the volume going and the treble does kill my ears.

what are the higher end headphones with this style sound signature. Do they have to be closed backs?

Bass is often gonna feel different in a closed vs open headphone. What price range are you looking at? Something like the E-MU Teak might be worth a look

Denon AH-D7200. 9200 or Fostex TH-900MK2 if you're willing to spend more. ZMF if you want to go end game.

The M50X is really mediocre to my ear (sorry to say) so I'm a little surprised you haven't found their better (for you) yet.
