What part do you listen to the most?

I find that it depends on what headphones I'm using. Drums with my sonys, definitely vocals with my super.fi 3s...do I detect a midrange boost..?

Excellent thread idea by the way.

It's a difficult question to answer. When listening to jazz, I'm usually focused on the instrument soloing/improvising at the time. More often than not, I'm listening to the difficulty of the piece - thinking to myself, "Can I play that?". So execution, rhythm, solo/improvisational ability, etc. In a more general sense, when I'm listening to jam bands, particularly Medeski Martin and Wood, The Disco Biscuits, the Steve Kimock Band, and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, I'm listening to the drums, being a drummer, with the keyboards being next, being a keyboardist. If a harmonica part shows up, I'll listen to that pretty intentively, being a harmonica player

For some reason, I could never follow the bass parts extensively unless they're really prominent (think "So What" prominent). I listen to harmony often if it is pertinent, such as in big band pieces and classical pieces - in that sense, the viruosity of the composition in general is focused on.

What a loaded question/response!

Hard question, depends on what you listen to.

NIN - listen to vocals, melodies, 'emotion', lyrics

Tool - Everything equally, almost. Sometimes im drawn to the drums, sometimes the lyrics, mostly the vocals, everything

Infected mushroom - Melodies and bass

All dark gothic music - Melodies and vocals

All rock-ish music - Drums & vocals

I listen largely on drums, melodies and how the melodies develop, and vocals.

Ttvetjanu, being a DT-770 owner also, are you more drawn to the lows of music?

that's one thing i've noticed, with my DT-770's i'm really attracted to the lows of music now, and that's why i think i'm mostly drawn to the percussion side of things (also bass lines, or synth bass lines)

i think the headphones people listen to also have an effect on what parts of the music they listen to more.

a very interesting topic i think.
