I have personally felt that people on head-fi are much more responsive and knowledgeable. I was only using Reddit prior to joining this forum so wanted to ask others of their experience.

Discussions welcome!

I agree that most people are pretty friendly here.
Back when I first joined it seemed like a lot of Head-Fi was just people shouting their opinions at one another, but in the intervening years it seems like people have calmed down and are mostly helpful where they can be. I spent several years away and only came back about a year and a half ago. Of course there are always differences of opinion, and naturally there are some bad eggs, and some people that try to be helpful but just aren't... But mostly I think it's good people doing the best they can to make this a good, functioning community.

That is good to hear, glad to be apart of the community. Do you guys still find yourselves on Reddit Headphones sub after joining this forum? I find myself going back to Reddit Headphones sub a lot less.

I'm not a member of Reddit. I do look at some subreddits sometimes when I can't find what I'm looking for here, but mostly I just skip past the awful stuff and go for what's useful. I've never tried to actually interact with anybody there. My approach with Reddit is kind of like skimming the dictionary: "not useful, not useful, not useful... Ah, here we go."

It probably goes without saying that you get out of this place what you put into it (probably goes for Reddit, too). If you go in expecting a certain answer or thinking everyone is going to have "The Answer," then undoubtedly you're going to be disappointed. If you come in and realize that it's a big site with lots of members with varying levels of expertise and ability/willingness to help, and if you're patient with yourself and others, then there's a lot to be gained here.

EDIT: *gasp* I just realized that as of Sunday I'll have been a member on Head-Fi for ten years! Gah! I'm getting old!

I have only spent limited time on Reddit...but the level of conversation, it's...lacking to say the least. I was on a thread recently where a guy was asking about headphone A vs. headphone B, and the most 'upvoted' response was from some guy that said "both of those are SH%T, you should get this other one!" and he recommended a headphone that was discontinued, and a totally different style (the OP was asking about open headphones and the 'helpful' moron suggested a closed back) and honestly, it's not even a better headphone, just a different sound signature...
my point being the most popular opinion was less than useless...
headfi is a much more helpful and welcoming place, in my experience

Fair enough, thank you. I noticed replies here are a LOT faster as well.

Question: if you're not an active member/participant/whatever of a particular subreddit, can you still participate/upvote/etc. within that subreddit? If so, that seems like it would just lead to the opinion that's easiest to comprehend to the uninformed mind becoming the most upvoted (and therefore "best") opinion. Seems like a good way for the uninformed to spread misinformation.
I think one it the benefits of Head-Fi is that it's a specialty website and people come here with that expectation and are more able to recognize expertise when they see it. I guess that's a long winded way of saying there aren't too many trolls here and that it's somewhat self regulating.

Yes you can still participate, upvote, and do as you wish even if you are new.

Honestly, you’re going to get biased responses no matter where you post/browse. Pick whichever community(communities) are right for you, and just enjoy this hobby like everyone else here (and over there).

I basically did the same OP for myself. Started in this whole thing through Reddit surfing and having a general interest in upgrading over my M50Xs. Hung around the sub a bit then realized that Reddit was not really for quality discussions and helpful info all the time. Heard about this community through there and I am finding myself coming over here more than checking the sub. Great community for sure over here!
