It's quite small, about 1cm or 2 lengthways and has little holes in the top.

I thought it might be some sort of nest for some weird insect, obviously abandoned due to all the spider webs on it.

Anyone know what it is or what made it?

1 or 2 cm? Looks like the sucked-out carcass of a rolly polly / potato / whatever the F bug as seen here. It appears that it was encased in web by a spider at one point.

It seems a bit small for a wasp nest... The holes are really really small, like as big as the holes in the plastic grill bit on the back of the Alessandro MS1.

It appears to be a small wasp nest. As already suggested, my recommendation is fire.

No, the proper way to dispose of wasp or bee nests is to hit them with bats (or simply swat them, for the smaller nests). It's more exciting.
