What is the Saddest song ever written?

Gil Scott-Heron, "Home Is Where the Hatred Is" I just saw him doing this live last week and when I hear this song I think about my Pops and other Vets who had/have these issues. The show was incredible, Fox Theater in Boulder.
Alice in Chains, "Down in a Hole" gets to me as well.

There's a song by Caedmon's Call about a true story in which the writer of the song (and performer in this case - just guitar and vocal) attended and played piano at the funeral of his best friend's sister, who had committed suicide. It's just very sad and hits if you've ever known anyone to commit suicide or known someone who was left behind by it. It's called "Center Aisle". Lyrics follow.

"Thank God I’m back in my car
And driving home, and driving home
Cause the air was thin and so cold
Back in there
It was my first time
Won't be my last time
And the questions rise
Expectations fall
In light of it all

There aren't words to say,
Words aren't remembered
The presence is
A good friend once told me
And he was there, he was there
She wasn’t there
And it’s not fair, it’s not fair

What crimes have you committed
Demanding such penance
That couldn't wait for five more minutes
And a cry for help
Cause this room is so peaceful
And this room is so quiet
And I hate the silence
And I can’t walk
The center aisle

I’ve been here for over three hours
Behind the flowers
So beautiful and young
And so alive
And so in need of someone,
Someone to talk to them
Cause theirs are fragile lives

What crimes have you committed
Demanding such penance
That couldn't wait for five more minutes
And a cry for help
Cause this room is so peaceful
And this room is so quiet
And I hate the silence
And I can’t walk
The center aisle

I think about my brother
And how I just stood there
My hands in my pockets,
And my heart in my throat

Thank god I’m back in my car
And driving home, and driving home
But in that place I leave
All my days
I’ve taken life for granted
And the words I wrote for her
And my best friend crying
And a young girl lying
On all our hearts

What crimes have you committed
Demanding such penance
That couldn't wait for five more minutes
And a cry for help
Cause this room is so peaceful
And this room is so quiet
And I hate the silence
And I can’t walk
The center aisle"

"Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton is about the pain he felt following the 20 March 1991 death of his four-year-old son, Conor.

Schubert's pianosonata 21, D960, 2-Andante Sostenuto

First time I heard it (by the great Sviataslav Richter,) I think it captures human suffering like nothing I ever heard before. I was depressed for a week

Short after he wrote this, Schubert died age 31. This still bothers me btw

The pianosonata fits Richter's character very well, they used it for the documentary about his life, called 'Enigma'..
