What is the Saddest song ever written?

If it's been mentioned already, I can't find it.

"Wreck on the Highway" -- Bruce Springsteen.

Off the same album, "The River" and "The Price You Pay" have a whole lot of hurt and fatalism in them, too.

There have been many excellent sad songs listed here. Here are a few more that spring to mind:

How Can I Ever Be Simple Again? ~ Richard Thompson

Oh she danced in the street with the guns all around her
All torn like a rag doll, barefoot in the rain
And she sang like a child, toora-day toora-daddy
Oh how will I ever be simple again

She sat by the banks of the dirty grey river
And tried for a fish with a worm on a pin
There was nothing but fever and ghosts in the water
Oh how will I ever be simple again

War was my love and my friend and companion
And what did I care for the pretty and plain
But her smile was so clear and my heart was so troubled
Oh how will I ever be simple again

In her poor burned-out house I sat at her table
The smell of her hair was like cornfields in May
And I wanted to weep and my eyes ached from trying
Oh how will I ever be simple again

So graceful she moved through the dust and the ruin
And happy she was in her dances and games
Oh teach me to see with your innocent eyes, love
Oh how will I ever be simple again
Oh how will I ever be simple again

The Last Thing on My Mind ~Tom Paxton

It's a lesson too late for the learning
Made of sand, made of sand
In the wink of an eye my soul is turning
In your hand, in your hand.

Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind?
Well I should have loved you better,
Didn't mean to be unkind
You know that was the last thing on my mind.

You've got reasons a-plenty for going
This I know, this I know
For the weeds have been steadily growing
Please don't go, please don't go.

Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind?
I could have loved you better,
Didn't mean to be unkind
You know that was the last thing on my mind.

As I lie in my bed every morning
Without you, without you
Each song in my breast dies a-borning
Without you, without you

Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind?
Well I should have loved you better,
Didn't mean to be unkind
You know that was the last thing on my mind.

The Streets of London ~ Ralph McTell

Have you seen the old man
In the closed-down market
Kicking up the paper,
with his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
And held loosely at his side
Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news

So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind

Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?
She's no time for talking,
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her home in two carrier bags.

In the all night cafe
At a quarter past eleven,
Same old man is sitting there on his own
Looking at the world
Over the rim of his tea-cup,
Each tea last an hour
Then he wanders home alone

And have you seen the old man
Outside the seaman's mission
Memory fading with
The medal ribbons that he wears?
In our winter city,
The rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care

I haven't read this entire thread yet to see if this has been posted earlier, but my vote goes to...

Eric Clapton - "Tears in Heaven"

Written about his 4 year old son who fell to his death from a window.

Stevie Ray Vaughan's - "Tin Pan Alley"

Not necessarily a "sad" song, but certainly a sad state of affairs for some of our population and after all, it is the blues.

Couldn't agree more. Very sad song. It's the only song I thought of when I saw this topic.

Can't believe I didn't think of this right away.

Billy Bragg -- "Tank Park Salute"

Pure emotional Kryptonite for any man who's lost a father, or has a son who one day will.

Tough to choose one that remains constant for me...but I do recall hearing "Overcome" by Live after 9/11, and it made me tremble for months afterwards whenever I heard it. Lost a couple friends in the Towers that day.

Goodbye - Elton John, hands down
First episode at Hienton - Elton John runner up
Indian Sunset - Elton John
I am not a huge Elton John fan but somehow in this arena he has some amazing ones

Changes - Phil Ochs I can't even listen to it anymore it's so beautiful and sad. If he wasn't such a radical he would have blown Dylan clear out of the water. Dylan said as much himself.

Excellent choices! Everyone should hear Streets of London at least once-it is one of the most beautiful songs ever written hands down.

This probably isn't the saddest, but it is still sad and depressing.

Elliott Smith - wouldn't mama be proud?

the question is wouldn't mama be proud?
there's a silver lining in the corporate cloud
and the pretty post that you're taking as an nco
of the great pretender?
i should sure think so!
wouldn't mama be proud?
"can I take your order?" asked the heavenly host
ticket to the jet stream blowing coast to coast
the long stemmed glasses, a movie and a pleasant dream in mid-air
"you gotta tell me quickly, 'cos we're almost there"
wouldn't mama be proud?
pointed out of the window at the sky gone black
"kid, you're on the right track"
if i send you postcards from the side of the road
photographs of moving parts about to implode
if i crawl to keep it together like you say you know i can do
to transmit a moment from me to you
wouldn't mama be proud?
wouldn't mama be proud?
wouldn't mama be proud?

Gary Jules - Mad World (Especially with the montage at the end of Donnie Darko)
NIN - Hurt

And one of my favorites -

As I Lay Dying - Behind Me Lies Another Fallen Soldier

Quote:

I want, to bring you, all that is in my heart.
I want to give you, my everything.
But I've failed you. I've failed you so many times.
How can I stand here? How can I stand here before you?
When I begin to steal what only belongs to you
I am able to bring You nothing that isn't already Yours
I am so ashamed of what I ever called my own
Take what I have, take these broken remains
What can I give to You that You don't already deserve
You laid down Your life when I refused to give mine
