"Yes, We Have No Bananas" would be quite sad if one really had one's heart set on bananas.

LOL

Two songs stick in my mind as being very sad.

Old Shep by Elvis Presley

Late For The Sky by Jackson Browne.

Lots of Beck and Cure mentions - what a surprise!

I was thinking "Guess I'm Doing Fine" by Beck, but many songs on Sea Change fit here.

"Pictures of You" by the Cure on Disintegration

"Avalanche" by Ryan Adams on Love is Hell

"Gacy" by Sufjan Stevens on Illinoise - of course being from Illinois and remembering when that all happened, probably affects me more than others

opeth - face of melinda. i guess that's the only song that's consistently 'sad' throughout...there are parts of songs from many other bands that i would consider to be really moving as well.

It's supposed to have caused a rash of suicides according to some sources.
Here are the translated lyrics (it does pretty pessimistic):
It is autumn and the leaves are falling
All love has died on earth
The wind is weeping with sorrowful tears
My heart will never hope for a new spring again
My tears and my sorrows are all in vain
People are heartless, greedy and wicked...

Love has died!

The world has come to its end, hope has ceased to have a meaning
Cities are being wiped out, shrapnel is making music
Meadows are coloured red with human blood
There are dead people on the streets everywhere
I will say another quiet prayer:
People are sinners, Lord, they make mistakes...

The world has ended!

I've listened to the English versions, but they have different (not as depressing) lyrics, but I've been unable to find the original song, so I can't really say whether or not it's really depressing.

i was reading up a bit on this song, and the stories behind it are a bit creepy. has anyone ever heard the real version of this song?

By far the saddest song I know of. Distant second place goes to Radiohead - How To Disappear Completely, but Cohen (and actually a good number of his songs) takes the cake.
