Anyway, I prefer songs which express melancholy and sadness through sound, rather than words. Some examples:
  1. Autechre - Vletrmx21, Krib
  2. Boards of Canada - all of the Hi Scores EP (except for "Nlogax")
  3. Global Communication - 14:31 and a bunch of tracks on Pentamerous Metamorphosis
Umm... that's about all I can think of now. But, yeah, anyone else have the same problem as I?

ditto, I completely ignore lyrics most of the time, example, REM's "everybody hurts", has a really lighthearted chord progression. I don't find it the least bit saddening.
I think the soundtrack to a "beautiful mind" is really sad.

Dance with the Devil by Immortal Technique.

Such a sad/emotional/thought-provoking story. Gets me depressed every time I listen to it.

Another vote for "Lick My Love Pump"; It's true, D minor is by far the saddest of all keys.

Let's see...
"Butterfly" - Weezer (especially sad in the context of the album)
"Opium" - Marcy Playground
These haven't been mentioned yet.

Another vote for REM's Everybody Hurts (for non-classical).
For classical, Tomaso Albinoni's Adagio in G minor (was in the movie Gallipoli, if anyone's seen it...). Gets me every time.
Yesterday by John Lennon also really hits hard (but music does that to me ^__^).

Ok, I've been browsing this site for a few weeks now, guess its time to post something..

As for the saddest songs..

1. Yesterday (The Beatles)
2. Lonesome Tears (Beck)
3. Schindler's List, whole album (John Williams)
4. Last Goodbye (Jeff Buckley)
5. You Must Build A Fire (Crooked Fingers)

Ok, now that I'm thoroughly depressed, time to go get the new RHCP album..

Something to surpass my previous notation

Dark Sanctuary - Les Memoires Blessées
darksanctuary.jpg

1.La Clameur du Silence06:30
2.Présence05:15
3.D'une Mére 'a sa Fille
4.L'adieu á l'Enfant (1)
5.L'adieu á l'Enfant (2)
6.Abre los Ojos
7.A quoi bon?
8.Laissez moi Mourir
9.L'emprisonnée
10.Puisses-tu…
11.L'instant Funébre
12.Perdition
13.Les Mémoires Blessées

its cheerful tale of pestilence and death and misfortune after misfortune in France a few centuries ago will have you reaching for the razorblades. Beautiful orchestral arrangements, but so, so miserable.

Anyone ever heard of "Gloomy Sunday" with original lyrics by rezsô seress.
It's supposed to have caused a rash of suicides according to some sources.
Here are the translated lyrics (it does pretty pessimistic):
It is autumn and the leaves are falling
All love has died on earth
The wind is weeping with sorrowful tears
My heart will never hope for a new spring again
My tears and my sorrows are all in vain
People are heartless, greedy and wicked...

Love has died!

The world has come to its end, hope has ceased to have a meaning
Cities are being wiped out, shrapnel is making music
Meadows are coloured red with human blood
There are dead people on the streets everywhere
I will say another quiet prayer:
People are sinners, Lord, they make mistakes...

The world has ended!

I've listened to the English versions, but they have different (not as depressing) lyrics, but I've been unable to find the original song, so I can't really say whether or not it's really depressing.

It never used to be a sad song, but the saddest song for me is Stella Blue by the Grateful Dead. I have trouble hearing Jerry sing stella without missing what was.

The saddest song for me is...

Space Lion
CD Found on: Cowboy Bebop OST 1
The ending song for part 2, which is partially sax (Goodnight Julia), partially vocals in an unknown language, and entirely gorgeous.

Anyone whos watched Cowboy Bebop will know why. I don't know what makes the song so emotional for me.

on the side the song became a hymn for certain south east Asian countries revolutionary movements in the nineties...or so I read once...I guess I just like the idea.
