For me, it's "Black", by Pearl Jam. Check these lyrics:

"I know some day you'll have a beautiful life,
I know you'll be the sun,
in somebody else's sky,
but why, why, why, can't it be mine?"

I can't listen to it without becoming depressed. Great song though.

The saddest song of all time for me?

'T.B. Sheets' by Van Morrison

It's devastating.

Greenday - "Time of your Life". I was recovering from a horrible breakup with my g-friend of 4 years when this tune came out and it always touched me.... the lyrics, vocal melody and the simple major chord progression.

Queen- "Love of my life". Brian Mays 12 string guitar work is incredible acompanyment to one of Rocks most passionave / dynamic singers. I saw a live DVD with 1000s of young girls weeping at the end of this tune. I've always wondered who they had in mine when they wrote this tune.

Hmm... thats it... I guess I dont listen to too many sad tunes.

For non classical, I would have to say "lonesome tears" by beck is my all time favorite sad song, but you could just include the whole sea change album, really good sad stuff. That is all...

I am a tremendous fan of The Cure, and faith happens to be my favourite song by them.

However lately "Cut Here" has been doing me in.

I recently had an old friend end his own life, and that is what this song is about.

"So we meet again!" and I offer my hand
All dry and English slow
And you look at me and I understand
Yeah it's a look I used to know
"Three long years... and your favourite man...
Is that any way to say hello?"
And you hold me... like you'll never let me go

"Oh c'mon and have a drink with me
Sit down and talk a while..."
"Oh I wish I could... and I will!
But now I just don't have the time..."
And over my shoulder as I walk away
I see you give that look goodbye...
I still see that look in your eye...

So dizzy Mr. Busy - Too much rush to talk to Billy
All the silly frilly things have to first get done
In a minute - sometime soon - maybe next time - make it June
Until later... doesn't always come

It's so hard to think "It ends sometime
And this could be the last
I should really hear you sing again
And I should really watch you dance"
Because it's hard to think
"I'll never get another chance
To hold you... to hold you... "

But chilly Mr. Dilly - Too much rush to talk to Billy
All the tizzy fizzy idiot things must get done
In a second - just hang on - all in good time - wont be long
Until later...

I should've stopped to think - I should've made the time
I could've had that drink - I could've talked a while
I would've done it right - I would've moved us on
But I didn't - now it's all too late
It's over... over
And you're gone..

I miss you I miss you I miss you
I miss you I miss you I miss you so much

But how many times can I walk away and wish "If only..."
But how many times can I talk this way and wish "If only..."
Keep on making the same mistake
Keep on aching the same heartbreak
I wish "If only..."

But "If only...."
Is a wish too late...

Solvejg's Song, by Grieg, is pretty nerve-shattering when sung by the right soprano. Hits me where I live.

For me it's gotta be Tim McGraw's "Don't Take the Girl." By the second verse I'm almost always in tears. Martina McBride's "Concrete Angel" is a fairly close second.

"Don't Take the Girl"

Johnny's daddy was taking him fishin'
When he was eight years old.
Little girl came through the front gate
holdin' a fishin' pole.
His dad looked down and smiled,
he said, "We can't leave her behind"
"Son, I know you don't want her to go,
but someday you'll change your mind."
And Johnny said,
"Take Jimmy Johnson,
take Tommy Tompson.
Take my best friend, Bo.
Take anybody that you want as
long as she don't go.
Take any boy in the world,
daddy please, don't take the girl."

Same old boy, same sweet girl
ten years down the road.
He held her tight and kissed her lips in
front of the picture show.
Stranger came and pulled a gun
Grabbed her by the arm said "If you do what I tell you to,
there won't be any harm"
And Johnny said "Take my money,
take my wallet,
take my credit cards.
Here's the watch that my grandpa gave me
Here's the key to my car
Mister give it a whirl,
But please don't take the girl."

Same old boy
Same sweet girl
Five years down the road
There's gonna be a little one and she
says it's time to go.
Doctor says the baby's fine
but you'll have to leave
'Cause his momma's fading fast and
Johnny hit his knees and there he prayed
"Take the very breath you gave me.
Take the heart from my chest.
I'll gladly take her place if you'll let me,
make this my last request.
Take me out of this world
God, please don't take the girl"

Johnny's daddy
Was taking him fishin'
When he was eight years old

"Concrete Angel"

She walks to school with a lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holding back;
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday,
She hides the bruises with the linen and lace;
oh

The teacher wonders but she doesn't ask,
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask;
Bearing the burdon of a secret storm,
Sometimes she wishes she was never born;

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel

Somebody cries in the middle of the night,
The neighbors hear but they turn out the lights;
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate,
When morning comes it will be too late.

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel

A statue stands in a shaded place,
An angel girl with an upturned face;
Her name is written on a polished rock,
A broken heart that the world forgot.

Through the wind and the rain,
She stands hard as a stone in a world that she can't rise above;
But her dreams give her wings and she flies to a place where she's loved.

Concrete Angel
