What is the best PS2 game so far?

Hehe, I love that game so much

Easily one of my all time favorites, and it doesn't hurt to mention it here IMHO, since it's better than most PS2 games out right now.

Vagrant story KICKED ASS... it was made by the same folks that did Final Fantasy Tactics, right down to the OST composers. It was quite hard, but worth it- it was fun as hell, and it has a new game + feature with new areas to explore once you've beaten the game, as well as bosses and a bunch of other stuff.

You basically are given this much slot to fill in with your command moves during combat, then with that slot, basically you just press any directional buttons, and just see whether you have found yourself a new combo or something.

Anyway, it is more interesting than what it sounds like here.

Is FInal Fantasy X-2 worth playing, or it's just like a short, expansion-type kind of thing based from FF X?

I think you mean Legend of Legaia; personally I never found the demo much fun so I never bought it, but have a burned copy to play on a modded system, so at some point I might try it out again.
Also, Final Fantasy X-2 is a sequel to FFX, where the main story centers around Yuna this time. But the way it plays is quite different from FFX's mostly linear story, it lets the player make decisions on what to do during the story, like an open ended mission type gameplay. Despite this, I haven't really gotten far into the game. Other titles manage to grasp more of my attention, like Klonoa 2 (The Klonoa series is awesome, btw) GTA San Andreas and MGS3 Snake Eater. I guess I didn't find the more cosplay/pop-friendly attitude of FFX2 that appealing...

hey thanks for the rec's kirosia, ooheadsoo, dj and all. i don't mind cutscenes as long as they're short, and progress the game, not the story. i have yet to play a videogame with a story worth reading or watching. to me, every videogame i have played is little more than "thank your mario! now there is another quest for you!"

if video game pm's really wanted to make a game with a good story, they'd pay a real writer to create it.

Have you played the old computer RPG game Baldur's Gate? They are saying that's probably the best-written game ever.
If I remember, they actually paid writer for that.

I wasn't really paying attention with the story while I was playing Baldur's Gate, so not sure how good it was; too much dialogue for me back then.

FF series usually have nice stories, Metal Gear Snake Eater definetely is one of my favourite story-wise (and gameplay), and Genji, the one I am playing at the moment, has pretty ok story. It has lots of cut scenes, but not boring ones, it's actually interesting since the cutscene graphic is very beautiful and life-like.

Try to get Genji from your video shop or something and see what I mean. I think the game is not that hard to beat either, so maybe a few days will suffice.

i don't think i played baldur's gate, and since "sons of liberty" i have an active hate for mgs. i think my problem is i just don't like cutscenes. i want to play the frigging game, why an i sitting here waiting for some dumb attempt at a plot to unravel. sorry about the rant again.

My parents are getting my sister a PS2 and DDR for Christmas, therefore I get to ask for games to play on it! So far I have:

--GT4
--Burnout 3
--NFL Blitz 2003

Two racing games and a classic. Now I just need a real quality RPG and a nice shoot-em-up to go with those. Any ideas? I've been reading the thread and there seems to be some conflicting views on a lot of these games, eg, "Explosions 2004 is so awesome guys!" said by someone here meanwhile a review gives them "4.0 out of 10.0, a horrible game".

Snake eater has MUCH less in regards to cutscenes and convoluted plotlines. I beat mgs3 before 2, and the latter was overboard.

FFX is the standard bearer for ps2 rpgs. Hard not to enjoy it at least a little. Everything else is relatively more risky. Voice acting was bad on the main characters, but supporting cast were good.

X-2 is not a short addon, but it's disappointing as a followup to X. I enjoyed the ost.

are there any rpg games for the ps2 or especially the gbasp that are NOT like ff9? i honestly gave it a real shot but there's something about ff9 that just annoys me. i think it's the combat mode. i would prefer a rpg that integrated combat better in the game, and with MUCH fewer cutscenes.

FFX is more "revolutionary" in regard to combat (character switching in-battle, quicker, more fluid battles). And all the *** since... I guess VIII (maybe VII...) have been very cutscene heavy, and most fans love it.

As far as combat engines, the tradition of the FF series is true turn-based combat, like FF9-- which is, incidentally, the type I fell in love with. FFIII/VI... Man, those were the days! I played it on SNES when I was a kid, picked up the Collection re-release for the PSX ages ago... I've been desperately searching for my VI disc recently, but I fear it's gotten lost in one of our moves. I'm praying it turns up. Terra! Kefka! Espers! Floating Island! Gah!

Shin Megami Tensei/Digital Devil Saga has a very interesting combat system, I thought. It's turn-based but somewhat different than usual. Faster.

OMG, dude, get your FF6 Disc NOW, the game is sooooo incredble- it is as good as any top tier game made today IMHO, regardless of the system it was made for originally. I actually plan on going through the game at least one more time, with cheats, to check something important. The ending of the game changes depending on who is and who is not in your final party (has nothing to do with who dies in the final battles), and I want to see just what was put in that I never knew about. Should be quite interesting...

Wasn't III/VI active battle? Coulda sworn it was. If only all the active games coulda been like Chrono Trigger, at the least, where there was an option for menu pausing.

Red, I think Son of Liberty is the infamous serie of MGS that has the out of the context storyline. Many people have complained about it, so I can understand how it put you off for the other series.

Give Snake Eater a go, seriously. You don't know what you've been missing.
It is not boring at all. It's the story about how the Big Boss became evil, so you're actually playing as the bad guy when he was a good guy and learned what made him a bad guy.

Indeed it does- and you have two options: Active, where your timer is constant, and Wait, where your timer stops when you are in an item/magic/skill type menu, allowing you more time to make critical decisions. It also sports 2-player, which not many people know about or implement. While the first player makes all regular gameplay moves, a second player can participate in battles, as any number of characters in a party as I understand it.

Damn straight, my man! (high five on the downlow...

) The storyline to MGS3 is better executed especially around the endgame and IMHO better than most movies I've seen, if not better than all of them. It was that kind of experience to me, drew me right in and wouldn't let me go until the infamous last conversations after the end credits were over.

I have to agree with the consensus here. Ico and shadow of the colossus are great games. Katamari Damacy is fun too, very addicting little wonder of a game.

Yeah, some interesting stuff happens depending on your party config...

/fondly remembers hunting Zone Eaters in that little patch of desert

I decided to suck it up and bought a GH version off ebay. I'm still looking for my Anthology set, though.

For me it would have to be Gran Turismo 4
