Traded a 1975 Dodge Extended Van with Conversion (Carpet over four inches of foam, Wheelwell storage boxes/bench seat, Custom headers/exhaust, and wheels and tires), in 1981 for:

McIntosh C29 Preamp (10w Headamp included), Two PS Audio Power Amps (180 wpc), an Audio Control 1/3 Octave Spectrum analyzer/display/Equalizer, and a Nikko FM Tuner - all new except the McIntosh "lightly used".

The Van would now be worth next to nothing, but the electronics are worth today more than what the van was worth when I traded.

Should we be expecting a flood of 650's on the For Sale forum or eBay soon?

I found 3 Raytheon 7729's in a tube sellers assorted boxes of tubes and got them for $10 each.

At a stereo shop they had 3 1/2 meter AudioTruth Lapis X3 cables for $75. I used them for over a year and sold them for $180.

I went to buy a "tube" at an....ok; it was actually a dashboard light....and it was at an auto parts store, and the kid all alone behind the counter looked as though inertia had gotten ahold of him and moving again was a real problem. When I sat the light on the counter he asked me my favorite number between one and ten. I answered: "Pi" and he asked me to guess again. I think I said "seven" and he said "Correct! No charge"!!

The best deal in audio happened here on Head-Fi when I swapped a pair of HD414s for a new pair of KSC75s still sealed in the package. I felt a bit guilty though cause it really was an uneven trade. I felt even worse when I got the KSCs and there was also a pair of Rat Shack pads tossed in.

I would have thought it was a real good deal, but my concience still bothers me.

The HD414's sell for up to $100 or more on eBay so it probably isn't anything to feel guilty about.

Some kind headfier gave me the GoVibe 5 for free! Good deal. Two days later I went to buy the Proline 750's. Listprice in Holland is 299 euros. My bf drove me to Brussel where it was 185 euros new out of the box! Yet another good deal!

Best one so far has probably been picking up a pair of KSC-75s for $10 CAD. Man, I wish I had bought a few more at that price.

One fall day a few years ago, I dropped by at the Surplus Exchange, one of Kansas City's best-kept-secrets for scroungers [I've seen Mac G3's there -used, to be sure - for $50], and found a Proton 300/301 combo for ten bucks. A little DeOxit in the scritchy volume pot, and they were good to go. They replaced B&W Matrix 805's in my "main system". They usually go on eBay for $10 - $200. Realizing that I had yet to scour one area, I stowed the Protons and went back in. On that foray, I picked up a B&O all-in-one. It was another ten bucks, and I sold it's MMC20EN phono cartridge on eBay for over $70.

At the DAV, I picked up a JVC MX-1, the first of a long line of compact stereos, for $35, a little rough, but everything worked, and the MSRP about 1980 was about $1000.

Billinkansas kindly gave me an excellent Toshiba tuner, and I have been finding out all over again that there are good things on the airwaves. Thanks again, Bill!

At a church rummage sale was a Thorens TD-145, marked "$15 - no platter". Took it home and unpacked it - it was ALL there.

I could go on, but those are the highlights. If I include the bad deals, I probably break even...
