What is it about echo in IEMs? (I wanna know)

hello Mido,

If you don't hear it, then you won't hear it. It is as simple as that. My ears are for some horrid reason, acutely aware of two things: hiss and bad echo. For the record, the q-Jays have an echo which I don't like.

Fortunately, I seem to be one of a very few who are bothered by the issue. If you are not bothered by it, then there should be no cause to 'hear' it.

it could either mean two things (the way I see it):
1. The housing of the driver causes the 'thickness' of the sound to increase.
which leads into my second point
2. the decay is slowed down, at least notes are held longer as they are supposed to.

much of this depends on what music you listen to and some tracks even are supposed to have an echo -> CCR
the slow decay makes you more aware of it?

Thanks for chiming in, shigzeo. According to your description this wouldn't be echo in the traditional sense, the kind of where you stand in an empty room and everything you say echoes from walls and ceiling, would it? If so I wouldn't understand why it should be limited to certain frequencies (like treble on the C700). At least the Denon is an all-metal construction, so I understand this phenomenon is not specific to plastic housing.

Could it be that this "echo" is in fact caused by resonance of the housing, like others have suggested? In this case the chamber would have some natural resonant frequency which could be in the bass or treble range. I'm not a technician and my knowledge of acoustics is very basic, therefore my speculations might of course be completely wrong.

yes there is an echo and it can be disturbing if you concentrate in the music most of the time and listen to alot of tarnce,house..etc its hard to describe but as if something is played and then after its decay there is something left over..something extends in space with the ie8 but not with the fx500.i first noticed it on a track for Infected mushrooms"Becoming insane" there will be echo in the first passage after the guitar kicks in in the beginning of the song.this echo is visible in the ie8 but i dont notice it on the fx500.i notice it also on some other tracks for chicane like "Daylight" and others..its not that disturbing or take from the enjoyment of music with the ie8,but i can understand why it can be a pain in the neck for some like shigzeo

Dammit,I just heard it again when listening to Black Eyed Peas"meet me halfway" and it is indeed annoying especially if you listen to the k701 and then transisting back to ie8(no comparison ofcourse).why did you bring up this subject James ,I became more aware of this issue
