The Ink Spots - Java Jive
Actually most of Ink Spots' songs I've heard are on the smooth side.

Listen to the Music - Chicago

It's always the first word that pops in my head when I hear that beginning guitar.

While I haven't listened to much calm and soothing music (metal head here), personally I'd have to say either the last 3:18 seconds of the Halo song from the first soundtrack (Mix of a piano with a soothing but light chorus in the background to highlight the piano), or Andy McKee - When She Cries.

Now that I think about it though:
Ilaria Graziano - replica
Ilaria Graziano - Christmas in the Silent Forest

As for upbeat I can only think of one:
Yoko Kanno & Gabriela Robin - Cyber Bard

Moving & The Saxophone Song by Kate Bush.
These two songs are connected on The Kick Inside album.

I see no one is a rap fan in here, or maybe no one thinks that rap music is smooth. I think "So Fresh, So Clean" by Outkast is a smooth song. And also Snoop Dogg's "Gz up, Hoes Down."
