Happiness to me is, having goals and achieving them.

And spending time with people you love.

I was the one who posted the link. As for Chris McCandless, he was eating a tuber which grows in the area, thinking he could live on that, not knowing that the plant inhibited absorption of nutrients. Thus, he starved to death, eating all the way. It might make a great diet product.

Happiness is fleeting and changes as you grow older and wiser.

When I was around 21 happiness was owning the best car stereo I could afford. In the end I owned an $8200 with nearly $4000 worth of electronics and speakers in it. It sounded incredible and had the flattest frequency response the installer had ever seen.

Once I got a little older I looked back at just how much money I wasted, and what I could have done with it investment-wise.

You will quickly find out that true happiness comes from the little things in life that you either ignored earlier in life, or made fun of in others. Time spent with friends, laughing a lot, learning new things to expand your knowledge and push your own boundaries, spending time with your family (which becomes painfully apparent when someone dies), etc. These are the things that will matter most to you. How good your headphone/speaker rig will provide enjoyment for hours on end, but is not likely to bring happiness that lasts.

Take risks, see great places, hang around with great people, read great books, and invest some of your life helping others. Then, as you do these things refine what makes you happy, do less of what doesn't.

I was hoping someone would say this. I'm also wondering whether anyone other than us gets it. :|

OK, thanks. I liked that movie, except the sad ending.

Puppies smell so I'll take the warm kitten instead.

I would agree with the warm puppy analogy. We have 12 now and while they are work, they are also a great joy. Unconditional love.

Anybody want to buy a puppy?

Like today I called up the radio station and requested a song because they said they were taking requests and 2 songs later they played it, that made me smile. I stuck my hand out the window while I was driving and the air was that perfect temperature that makes you just want to be outside and it felt pretty nice. I also saw some very pretty clouds on the edge of a storm. My happiest moments are always small but luckily since I'm easy to please they're frequent.

Let me put it in the words of VNV Nation:

Unaware of yourself

Only living
Only breathing
Losing all sense of time

The most fragile of things
Captivates and embraces you
Surrender and be witness
To this rarest of moments

You live within the sense of the order of things
What is truth
What is important
What defines you

No need to fear
No need to worry
About years that passed
About time you lost

Live seconds as a lifetime
Time it does not matter
You live within the sense
Of the stillness of time
