saw one on ebay with Serial# 2458Z0005 (not sure it is right though). List says it is brand new so unlikely it is 1st gen I guess ...

so consensus is that 1st gen is better then ?

Barcodes translate into item make and model, thus they have to be the same

Ha.. unless the term "drunken ebaying" means selling stuff too ..
Maybe one of my kidneys are on there too

The box looks the same... did they change the style of box later on?
my k601 has a see through plastic box.

I'm thinking to take the plunge.... A couple of questions:

(1) how much difference between 1st and 2nd Gen. K501?
(2) I had k701, how does it compare to K501?

I've seen so many rave opinions on K501, really tempting to give it a try....

Yes, older is better. That is what I mean by like the K240, the old 70's K240 is in a completely different league than the current production K240S (the insides are VERY different). With the K501 it is a smaller difference, but still an improvement. AKG is always changing their headphones without making it obvious, but sometimes you can find the changes in the service documents or by comparing phones from different production years.

I just got mine last year, so I suppose they are the new version. Do you know at what year - roughly - the new models came into production. And in what way are the older ones better.

Thanks
