What Do You Use For Burn-In?

I use my ears as well.

While reviewing a bunch of old threads looking for info, I ran across a few posts where folks had commented on some of the silly things that happened while they left their cans playing unattended.

The worst was the guy or gal who left the cans playing and a friend came along and hearing the music in the background decided to crank up the volume of the "speakers"!!

There were a bunch of others! But it scared me into avoiding leaving my phones playing unattended. But mostly I just enjoy listening to the tunes!

First I listen to music I know and enjoy over the new gear to gain a baseline on the new gear's sound. All gear is different and burn-in changes and requirements vary between nil and a couple hundred hours. Next, XLO Reference Recordings' Test & Burn-In CD for ten hours followed by Stereophile's Test CD 3 for a couple hours more. The XLO CD has a fifteen minute burn-in track which I put on repeat at slightly higher than normal listening levels to begin with. After five hours, volume gets kicked up about ten per cent more for the duration. The Stereophile CD has a 2:15 burn-in track with lots of well recorded percussion and I follow the same track repeat and volume drill with that. Then I listen once again to the gear with the same well known and well enjoyed music and see if there's enough improvement to end burn-in or if more is needed.

I haven't bought a new pair of headphones for awhile now but I've had pretty darn good success with pink noise on dynamic IEMs and canalphones. Noticeable difference after a night's worth - about 9 hours. Typically what happens is the bass tightens up.

I'm a believer.

music and pink noise; although i use the pink noise sparingly. i think using music is better since you get to listen to the difference as the music plays, thus you enjoy the music and the headphone too!

My computer runs into my receiver so I leave iTunes on shuffle when I'm not using the cans. Otherwise, they are on my head listening to the tunes of my choice. I definitely do not wait for the cans to burn in before I use them.

EDIT: When I'm not wearing them, they're still set to the same volume.

*snip*
I never just let them to burn in before I listen to them. I wonder how some people can just burn in their equipment like two weeks before even trying them out.

Same here. They burn in while I listen to my favorite music.
Never understood those who let the headphones play for weeks before they start listening to them.
