You should look into the K702 Anniversary. They honestly sound like the HD650 with more energy, bigger soundstage, and full bass all around. Not sure how the bass compares, but I liked both the 650 and Annie's bass.

Great mids to me should sound rich, detailed a ted warm but not too much at the lower mids with smooth across the entire mid-range frequency.. Also, mids-range is where a lot of instrument will come together, it needs to have spacious soundstage too.

What is the Sub bass like on those? I guess not great?

I got it for $429, and they have gone as much as $409.

Doing sub bass tests, they sound damn good. Not like the HE-400 in the sub bass, but for a very well balanced and fully open dynamic headphone, the bass is absolutely no slouch. This is from someone who has owned the sub bass monster D7000, HE-400, and others. I prefer the Annie to everything outside of the D7000.

There are DEFINITELY some tracks I have that the Annie has more bass presence than the HE-400. Without a doubt. So I'm gonna assume that the Annie has a minimal bass hump somewhere that is stronger than the HE-400 though I can't point it out. The Annie needs some graphs, quickly.

Ths HE400 is quite different from the HD650, especially in the mids. They are both dark headphones, but the HD650 is mid rich, relaxed, and smooth, while the HE400 is not mid rich, forward, and aggressive. The K702 has a lot more in common with the HD650 is that it's smooth, and the mids are considerably more forward than the HE400.

I may have to do that, actually. If/when I get the X1, and figure out what to do with the HE400, I'll see about sending out the Annie.

I'm not sure. I'd need to compare directly, but I don't have the HD650 anymore. Bass wasn't an area I had problems with on the HD650, so I didn't really pay attention to it's quantity.

Hmmmm,
to me the HD650 and the Q701 sound like night and day.
Can you expand on this, I can't imagine the K70x/701 sound changing so much that it is comparable to the HD650 sound....

The Q701 and K702 Annie are different. The K702 Annie is considerably warmer, richer, and more bassy. It's literally in between the Q701 and HD650 in tonal balance, actually leaning towards the HD650 side, with more energy.

Yes, its noticeable. I didn't like the Q701 for music use. I mean yeah, they're good, but I prefer something more musical and warm. The Annie was it.

One way you can evaluate what would "good sounding mids" sound like would be to go to a high end audio store and listen to speakers that have been reviewed as reproducing vocals and mids really well.  That would give you a good idea as to what they should sound like when you test headphones.  Or see if you can audition a set of electrostatic headphones.  Those seem to generally have great sounding mids.

Can you explain this because it doesn't make sense! I always thought the HE400 were quite smooth and dark from what I have read / seen in FR graphs etc.
