The Century Trilogy.png
I read this trilogy a long time ago while traveling for work. Now retired, I have
more time to get into it. Follows the lives of five families during the 20th century.

This book puts the lies and manipulations, misrepresentations, and disinformation in our body politic of the past few years, those that you knew but just couldn’t explain and some that you didn’t quite comprehend, into a clear, albeit still mind-boggling format.

The author spells them out with clarity and precision like in a text book, yet with compelling storytelling and interest, so it is easy to follow.
Feeling that we just lived through the twilight zone with the normalization of gaslighting resulting in PTSD and know, more than ever, how similar this is to the abuse encountered in a narcissistic relationship.
The truth's revealed as to these tactics is at once scary but empowering - Information IS Power!

Next on my list, a man who actually is an expert and dedicated his life to public health
I read Dr. Fauci's book, as I greatly respect him and his work. It's a somewhat clinical read, very detailed, and emotional. Easy to tell the man loved what he was doing with his life. Good choice.

I can honestly say that he is a physician’s physician! 👨‍⚕️

Without the benefit of hindsight, how do you interpret what’s right in front of your eyes?

The events that took place in Germany between 1919 and 1945 were dramatic and terrible but there were also moments of confusion, of doubt – of hope. How easy was it to know what was actually going on( not at all easy), to grasp the essence of National Socialism, to remain untouched by the propaganda or predict the Holocaust?

Travellers in the Third Reich is an extraordinary history of the rise of the Nazis based on fascinating first-hand accounts, drawing together a multitude of voices and stories, including students, politicians, musicians, diplomats, schoolchildren, communists, scholars, athletes, poets, journalists, fascists, artists, tourists, even celebrities like Charles Lindbergh and Samuel Beckett. Their experiences create a remarkable three-dimensional picture of Germany under Hitler – one so palpable that the reader will feel, hear, even breathe the atmosphere.

These are the accidental eyewitnesses to history. Disturbing, absurd, moving, and ranging from the deeply trivial to the deeply tragic, their tales give a fresh insight into the complexities of the Third Reich, its paradoxes and its ultimate destruction.

Wow, sounds heavy and interesting.

I read Upton Sinclair's work "The Lanny Budd Series" that takes place in roughly the same time. As a dealer of fine art, Mr. Budd has access inside many of the EU countries and lives through the political changes happening at the time. It's written about a fictional character, but with many real people and places in the stories ... similar to the way Ken Follett writes his historical fiction.

Edit: the book I'm currently reading, Follett's second in the Century Trilogy, covers the rise of Nazism in Germany. He just touched on what happened in the 1910s, but now it's 1933 and the brown shirts are running the streets and arresting people in Berlin.
