224 kbps 44.1 kHz QT/iTunes LC AAC for portable.
FLAC for home.

You may want to ask the encoder also, as it has a lot to do with the quality.

128, huh?

EAC+Lame 3.92 alt-preset extreme (256kbit VBR) - for pc and ipod together - call me lazy : )

is itune really that good for ripping?

128kbit - too many artifacts, 192kbit minimum. i am not doing any of the lossless codacs cos they arent support by the ipod (wav only) and they also take too much space - if i want to hear absolute quality (i doubt my ears notice the difference) i put on the original cd : )

I currently have everything ripped via EAC and FLAC (-5 -v) to my hard drive. As long as nothing drastic changes in lossy codecs, I'll likely be using Ogg Vorbis (GT3B1 -q6) for a portable, assuming I get either a Karma or a IHP-120.

As for 128 KBPS files, um, they're crap for the most part. Even on my fairly cheap speakers I can tell the difference between my MP3s. If you're going to use MP3, I'd recommend LAME 3.90.2 with --alt-preset standard, or --alt-preset extreme if you're finicky. You can add the -fast tag in if you can't tell the difference; do a test first. Likely you can't.

I've hit at least one example where iTunes beat EAC, but as another member pointed out that may be because of the drives in the two machines. Most of my music storage/listening is on an OS X box, so EAC isn't an option there. iTunes does now have error correction, but at this point how detailed it is and how it compares to EAC, CDParanoia, etc. is anyones guess.

I have about 30 cd's losless in flac, this is all my harddrive can endure. everything losless is out of the question since my whole collection (about 600 cd's) would take up about 300 gig

Unfortunately this high quality is not maintained on my downloads, mostly off the bittorrent network.
These are for the most part 192, some higher and about 20 losless albums as well.
In total too much for me to backup right now (about 150 gig

) I hate this cause I hear the difference to cd counterparts clearly, even with 320 kb mp3 or high bitrate AAC.
I wished it was all losless, now it's too low for archive, yet too valuable to delete.

I encode with provided software from devices and LAME. I always use MP3. Constant bitrate, high quality.

I use 128kbps to 320 kbps, depending upon application and music type. The more high freqs, the higher the bitrate should be.

Depends on encoder too. Some will give nasty sounds at 128kbps and some will be ok, but slightly "muffled".

For mp3 players using solid state memory I go for 128kbps.
For mp3/cd and HD players I usually go for 256kbps.

The lower the bitrate, the better the battery life will be, in most cases.

But sound is sound, and I want good sound. So 192kbps or better for me. Preferably 256kbps or 320kbps.

I use EAC to rip, Easylame to encode into 320 kbps --alt preset insane MP3's. Unbelievable quality for an MP3.

Lame --alt -preset extreme which gives an average of about 240kbps.

Except for a few albums which I encoded at 96 or 128 ABR for use on my flash player. They are noticably less dynamic sounding than --a -p e but good enough for listening while exercising in a noisy environment.

I like 160k AAC for the best size-to-quality ratio to my ears, or 192k MP3.
