My favorite is ma-ko-do-na-di-do (the word, not the fast food).

but i like sanjuro even better than yojimbo.

Same here. I started out liking Yojimbo first, then Sanjuro just grew on me after watching it a few times.

Henry fonda plays an incredibly well done role, as does Charles Bronson.

Think I'll add that to my wish list too.

How about "Tombstone." Maybe not a true Western to the purist, but a damn fine movie nontheless.

oh come on, you didn't like dances with wolves?!

i really like westerns, but haven't seen many and i've been trying to remedy that lately. i already own and love tombstone, unforgiven, and the good the bad and the ugly. on my to buy list are:

the outlaw josey wales
fistful of dollars
hang 'em high
(basically any clint eastwood starred in)
shane
true grit

this thread has given me some more ideas though and i can't wait to get them.

[edit]: p.s. eww, those japanese box sets are single layer. i doubt the image quality is as nice as my u.s. release of the international cut of the good, the bad, and the ugly.

It seems that there are not nearly enough John Ford westerns mentioned in this thread. My favorites, in chronological order:

Stagecoach (this film defined the genre)
Young Mr. Lincoln
My Darling Clementine
The Searchers
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

And what about Red River by Howard Hawks?

Among the late westerns, Don Siegel's The Shootist, with the dying John Wayne, is a great film, and Heaven's Gate by Michael Cimino has been completely underrated in the US.

Great thread. I find it quite amusing that the most popular Western Movie star (in this thread) is Clint Eastwood.

The supposed 'duke' of western movies, John Wayne hardly gets a mention. Not wanting to knock him too much, I find his movies to be boring for the most part and most of his movies focus too much on him and have very thin story lines. Just my $0.02. Flame away!

Anyway, some of my fave westerns are:

Jeremiah Johnson
Long Riders
Two Mules For Sister Sarah
Django
Paint Your Wagon (gotta hava comedy in there!)

Can I be cheeky and also nominate PARIS, TX. Not a western movie per se but it is set in the west, for the most part at least.
