My head-fi experience so far has taken me through this progression:
ibuds -> apple in-ear phones -> sony mdr51 -> shure e2 -> shure e4c -> grado sr60 -> koss a130 -> akg k601 -> grado sr225 -> beyer dt 990 -> akg k81dj -> akg k601 (again) -> grado hf-1
For me, the most forgiving, as in sounds the best out of the 4G ipod with songs ripped at 128 kbps, would be the k81dj (if you lean towards bass and mellower highs) or the hf-1 (if you want a little more air and detail) of the phones I've experienced so far. I'm loving the HF-1 straight out of my sony d-250. It seems like every one of my cds sounds consistently great.
As an aside, I was really surprised at how terrible the dt990s sounded out of my d-250. I've determined that they must need a truly high end source to sound right. The sony d-250 wasn't enough. It's got plenty of amp power for the dt990s but the highs were screeching and the bass was ridiculously bloated.
