forgiving but still sounded acceptable? KSC-35. Anything above that sounded better but revealed more of the crap, and anything less masked more but sounded worse.

Has to be the 75. I haven't heard the 35 so I'm not sure if it's any better. As for the sr60, I find that it has too much high-end and will reveal sibilance more easily than the 75. As for the 81, I think they're also close but instead have a more readily distortable low-end. So.... 75 FTW!

Sensaphonics 2X-S and Koss KSC-75

Both of these phones are especially good for a lot of the old school punk stuff I still listen to, some of which sounds like it was recorded in a crowded toilet stall at the neighborhood bar -- which probably isn't that far from the truth.

For me Grado's tend to turn mediocre equipment into something great. Maybe that's why they're such accessable headphones to beginners?

K501's sound great with vintage jazz, music that I would not listen to on HD650's due to their very revealing nature so for me the K501's are the most forgiving. To me KSC75's aren't forgiving or even headphones really, they are just glorified ear buds and rather bright and crunchy on a lot of recordings. You axed for it, my opinion, and I own all cans mentioned here, not hear say from somebody's brother...
