I like the trippy stuff like Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters" and "Sextant".

Anything and everything by Miles Davis form this period (1968 to 1975).

For example:

Jack Johnson
Bitches Brew
Live Evil
Big Fun
On The Corner
Pangea
Dark Magus
Live at the Fillmore East
etc.

Weather Report
Billy Cobham (Crosswinds)
Al DiMeola (elegant gypsy, Land of the Rising Sun, Casino)
George Duke (The Dream)
Stanley Clarke (I wanna play for you)
Bill Frissell
Brecker Brothers

Just the first names that pop up. I can be wrong about the period for some, I'm not shure about that.

I second the Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, and Weather Report (esp Mysterious Traveller and Heavy Weather.)

To that I'll add

Stanley Clarke - School Days. Title track has one of the sickest rock/jazz basslines ever.

Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow. Max Middleton on keys, production by George Martin (yep, that George Martin), and Beck on top of his game. Saw him about a year ago, left very disappointed that he didn't do Freeway Jam.

Well, Hancock's records are more jazz-funk than what generally passes for fusion, so to be specific:

Miles Davis

Get Up With It

On the Corner

Bitches Brew

If you can find a way to get just the "Go Ahead, John" takes on The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions box (they're on disc 2, I think), you won't be disappointed.

Ornette Coleman His electric records are both funky and trippy, albeit in a different way than Miles' and Herbie's. You might test the waters with the track "Voice Poetry" from Body Meta.

Add to the ones above a few things from Jean Luc Ponty, and David Sancious, very good the frist albums, Billy Cobham has a couple fo good stuff as well, of course Mahavishnu, Di meola, Corea, Hanckcok...be careful with some of the recos above as they are not fussion, more like some kind of experimental jazz, and attempts to create new things, that IMO resulted in very depressing performances to call them the best way, in some cases, and for my taste of course...
