try to find a older pair with 1000-3000 range serials. to my ear and to the ppl that had a chance to compare them, they sounded the best with better bass and warmer sound (took me awhile to find 1 on ebay) might save you a few bucks going by that. cos the general sentiment are newer the better

in reality my 1XXXX serial K1000 sounded too metalic and bright.

From recent pairs, I've seen the prices range from $1000 to $1350. The rare "unused" pair fetches $1600. Occasionally, someone will pick up a bairgain pair for around $400 or so, but these sales tend to be fairly obscure.

I saw one recent sale for $3500, but an amp was included in the package.

The AKG K1000’s are one of the “ultimate” headphones and are very unique. Their soundscape is unlikely to ever be duplicated. Hence, they are worth whatever it might cost you to get a pair. One of my biggest regrets is not buying a pair shortly after they had become discontinued and were only fetching around $500.

Can a portable amp that can power hd650's (eg supermicro IV), power k1000's? (Not that I could get one, just curious, since I know nothing about electrostatics)

The K1000 seem to go for anything between $700 and $1600.

This pair sold for $692 just 11 days ago.

1)k1000 are not electrostat.
2)you would need the RIGHT poweramp to do K1000 justice. good ones start from $1800+ (sig30) to what ever the most expensive speaker amp there is on the planet

now in the headfest section they;re talking about how source and cables play a major part with the K1000 setup too. oh god, every 1 is gonna turn into patrick one day.....i wonder what my bank will say if i wanted to take a heaphone loan that costs more then a car loan

Every world-class headphone will be transparent enough that ALL of your upstream components (source, amp, cables, power) will matter. When you are playing in this Ultra High End field, the headphone is only one piece of the puzzle. For example, you can easily spend twice of what an Orpheus fetches on the market on sources, amps, and cables, but that doesn't mean the Orpheus won't scale up. Same thing applies to the K1000s, R10s, Qualias, etc.
