I saw some Beyerdynamic DT811's somewhere, and I'm wondering what the heck they are... They seem to be European-only or something, and kind of resemble the old DT990's, but how do they sound? Anyone know? Are they worth anything?

Well it's a mid-grade beyer from the 90's. Uses the same velour pads as the 990.

I never heard an 811 myself, so i don't know what to say other than what I've already said.

Basic history as far as I know it: Beyer introduced a new bowl-shaped earcup assembly in 1990, presumably to replace the older cylinder-shaped cups of the DT770/880/990. First it was four higher-end models: the DT801/901, which were closed, and the DT811/911, open. In 1997 this was simplified into the much better known DT831 (closed) and DT931 (open). In between three lower-end versions came out, the DT331/431/531, of which the last still has a cult following.

I've never heard a DT811, but judging from the reputation of the 831 and 931, it should be detailed and bright, but a bit lacking in bass impact. Cash value is probably around $60-80, though it should perform well up against new phones at that price.

Once again Erik wows the audience with his obscure headphone knowledge. I never knew the 801/901 and 811/911 were split up that way. I'd always just assumed based on the 831/931 that the previous ones were broken up as 8xx being (semi-)closed and the 9xx being open.

I learned it by watching you!

Yeah, it confused me at first too, and I just assumed that the headphone gallery and archive had something wrong in its descriptions. Over time, creative google use has led me to the conclusion I give above. I should really have made it clear that I'm not dead sure about it. Every now and then I learn that some little tidbit I mention was a little off or misleading, and I try to go back and edit those posts, lest I propogate any false knowledge. But hey, I'm a (low-level) professor of design history-- piecing together this kind of stuff is what I do for fun.
