Portable amps are only bad (sort of) at driving "hungry" headphones, like the AKG K701/2.

What king of music do you listen to? Have you considered tubes? Do you have a separate budget for a source?

My last source and amp, the EMU0404 and KICAS Caliente did a really nice job to drive my HD650 and K701.

Yes, the search function is your friend. By source, I mean something that takes digital and turns it to analog (DAC) or a turntable/ tape player.

For tube amps, search "Little Dot MKIII, Little Dot MKIV, Darkvoice 336i, and Head-direct EF1."

I'm not well versed in the ways of solid state, so someone else will have to point you in that direction.

My first amp was a 336i and I think it is a good place to start. Good price with good delivery from China. Tube options are plentiful so you can get your feet wet in the tube rolling area (always fun). The options from Little Dot are also very good (well praised here on head-fi).

I agree with Fallen, when hooking up a PC to a headphone set up, there a lot of factors to consider i.e. external DAC, Soundcard choices, Interconnects etc. due the electrical noise from all of the other electrical devices inside your PC. More searching and reading up is a good idea.

Lots of good knowledge here

from what I've read the Zero DAC/Amp makes a good DAC and a nice preamp, as well as a good budget DAC/Amp combo.

I'm a huge noob as well, and am pretty much in the same situation as you :p

I know that Rockhopper is an extremely reputable DIY'er (Do-It-Yourselfer) and if I didn't already have a comparable amp I would be all over the M3 that is for sale on the Rockhopperaudio website.

I would recommend getting it, but you need a decent source for it to really sound good.

Which is where the Zero would come in. If you are good with a soldering iron, you could mod the Zero (there's a big long thread about it over in the DIY forum) and build yourself a M^3. Would probably save you money in the long run.

For speakers AND headphone out?

its not a bad unit! its quite good mid-fi imho.

I have 2 older yamaha units myself (not using them anymore since I'm more into replacing them with my DIY stuff). but if you are starting out, I do recommend the yamaha stuff.

663 is very new. I'd go used with a model or 2 (or 3!) back in time. you'll save tons.

also I prefer the ones from a few yrs ago. one big complaint is the bass/treble controls. they're useless! they jump in 2db steps. what kind of MORAN designed that user interface! sheesh. the one I have is a previous model, the rx-v650. that has volume in 1/2 db steps and I believe bass/treble are also either 1db or 1/2 db. very usable.

has all the spdif opto and coax most people are likely to need.

amp section is very usable. not high end but its clean enough, quiet enough and I lived with mine for years before upgrading.

if you don't know what you want yet, its probably a receiver instead of discrete parts. try the receiver method first is my rec.
