I've upgraded to the hd800 and since sold my beloved hd650s but all the time I owned them the GS-1 by Headamp really showed me what the 650s where truly capable of but the Gilmore lite by Headamp was only 10 percent less but truly worthwhile....The great ASR(headfi member) lead me down this path and also pointed to the headamp AE2 as more than proficient at revealing what the hd650s could do.

I don't think *any* of my DIY amps sound bad with the 650's. I'm mostly using my 2ch beta22 but I've also used the mini-max, the pimeta, the ppa and they all sound fine.

any competant amp will drive these phones. you don't need to overspend, really.

Get something with good tube rolling options and you can tailor the sound to suit your needs. With solid state, you get what you get. Just food for thought.
