For the last day or two, the number of new messages indicator has been going crazy. It will show 12 or 15 or 8 new messages even if I only have one or two. When I read a message, it will drop to zero or 5 or something, but there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for it. This is new behavior. Nothing changed in my setup since this started.
