Yes, that is correct.  The W-series has a wider open more laid back "concert hall" type of sound (for lack of a better description) where the UM-series is a more intimate experience.  Better instrument separation and more of a feeling that you are sitting IN the recording studio.

Here is a nice comparison between SE846 and Pro50.  Having had both I agree with pretty much everything but I thought the bass was more even between the two.  I would not have given an edge to SE846 on bass.  But I don't have them side by side either.  If nothing else it is fair to say neither is better but Pro50 is certainly less fatiguing for much longer listening periods.

Too funny, I've been meaning to ask you about this review/comparison and your thoughts about it (after you got and reviewed Pro 50).  I guess I got my answer now :)

I think the Pro50 actually has more bass.  Whether this is good or bad depends on the person.  I find texture, depth and extension very similar.  Not to cast W60 by the wayside in any way but I think Westone generally uses better quality drivers on the UM-series stuff.  The realism and decay is fantastic.

This.

But I cannot reconcile why the 5 driver W is $100 more then the UM - it can't just be the extra cable - the 3BA units are about the same MSRP if I'm not mistaken....

Cast not the w60! I had both side by side thus weekend and there is a notable difference in the sound quality of both - umpro 50 is significantly warmer with (compared to w60) some rolled off highs and less bass separation (to be expected)

However excellent earphone especially given the price range and very close to the w60 in terms of detail, far better than the w50.

That makes me feel better about getting my Pro50 for $499. I didn't realize that it was THAT close to the W60. Though I prefer the clear body over that metal plate.
Target market? Aluminum plates + cable could explain 80$+20$

That most likely would explain why. Though I still think that it is overpriced but eh. Really the price increase should be all cosmetic.

The Pro50 has just one large bass driver. The w60 has 2 separate smaller bass drivers. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Barbs - Not so sure about "rolled off highs" with Pro50.  It's just quite warm and presented differently.  UM3X/Pro surely has rolled off highs.  I hear more detail with Pro50 and cymbals have a very nice warm shimmer to them.

Gurashieruro - Yes, 1 larger bass driver with Pro50 versus 2 smaller ones with W60 but it is still about the tuning and overall tuning of how the mid drivers and bass driver(s) work together.

I use EQ.  With W60 I used a slight treble and slight bass boost.  With Pro50 I only use a treble boost that is probably a little more than "slight".    I find that doing this gets these 2 IEM's on much more even ground.  W60 certainly the more balanced more audiophile and Pro50 the more heart-racing adrenaline surge sound.  Pro50 sound is more open than I expected for a stage monitor IEM.  It's an outstanding alternative to SE846.   These two (SE846/Pro50) are closer alike than different but with the Pro50 being not so forward it is much easier on the ears.  It's more balanced sounding.

lol I would never consider the um50pro or w60 good value for money. I got my w3's for under $100 and um3x for $150 Are they 7-10 times better? I think not. Whoever can afford both the w60 and umpro50 must be filthy rich. Buying any new audiophile gear at full retail price can never be considered good value.
