I don't see it listed on the Sennheiser.de site.

I know the 800 has a hot treble but the 800S is supposed to have inferior bass. I thought maybe to buy the 800 and then EQ the treble problem away.

They discontinued it because nobody was buying it. And bass myths were created by tyll which Jude later proved were not true. End of story. buy HD800S and dont believe every bull.

I can probably get the 800 for around 4-500 euros cheaper than the 800s.

Having owned the 800S and 800 I can say that they're both great, if slightly different. You can find plenty of used HD800 on the market for several hundred less than 800S. I would recommend the 800 if you're comfortable doing at least the SDR mod. If you're not looking to mod your headphones at all I would say the 800S sounds easily better than an unmodded/un-eq'd 800.

I don't think you're going to kick yourself either way, they're both great headphones for clarity and soundstage.

I believe we have some leftover NIB 800 models for cheap here. If I can save 500 euros over the 800S I can live with EQing the 800 out of my RME. Thanks guys.

If adventurous, the "SDR Mod" for HD800 is supposed to be very similar to the changes made for HD800s

Amplifier is not enough from rme. If you want to use amp with switched power supply aka Rme youre buying wrong headphone. No amount of eq will change that. HD800S is very sensitive to gear, noise. You need high quality amp with very low noise power supply and high voltage.

If you are lucky you can find second-hand 800S really cheap. I think to go with 800S rather than 800 is much better. Had the chance to listen both for an hour so probably there are people more experts than me :D

I have other amps. I was not happy with the RME into my HD 600s, so I understand what you mean very well. I can EQ via the RME and listen via one of my other headamps. Thanks for mentioning this at any rate.

Yeah man i had v280 with Sennheiser HD800S and it was all good. Long story short i had sell it cause of unexpected financial issues. Now i have Topping dx7 dac/amp combo and it suck so bad. No bass power, no dynamics, sound harsh and lifeless and no eq can help it. Thing is revealing and neutral Headphones and speakers can sound like the gear we are using.
Great gear and youre in heaven
Bad gear and youre begging to quit.

I went with HD800 and Sonarworks for the EQ'ing. HD800 handles EQing very well.

Bern

Thanks. I'm really less worried about EQ than I am paying huge money for an 800S and maybe bass distortion to go with it. I just have to see if there are still leftover 800s over here when I get the cash :D
