i really dig retro stuff and want to add some vintage look headphones to my kit. can i get new products that look this way? or is there a truly classic vintage pair i should be looking out for?

i like the look of the Beyer DT150 but they're a bit tame...not ugly enough - would prefer them if the cups were much larger...and brown. decent sound would be good too, but its not as ultimately important as the look for this purchase. wanting some retro visual impact. basically, the more hideous the better.

any links or photos would be great - cheers

What about the Stax SR-303?
Looks almost identical to an SR-Lambda (from 1979)...

Forgot Stax! Duggeh might be also good person to contact here when it comes to ugly and massive headphones, he has had quite a lot of them as far as I have seen.

massive and retro. literally, koss won't even fix em for me, they're to old. had to resolder myself.

they honestly do not sound good though. impressive for 20-30 year old equipment, but not good.

You've got to strike the right balance when you'r going for these esoteric older fuglyphones. A vast swathe of them use small paper cone speaker drivers at 4 or 8 ohms and they all without any exception that I have found, sound like a fart in a damp cardboard box.

What you want to do is get ahold of older fuglyphoens which use post HD-414 driver tech (nice light drivers) or, even better, use orthodynamic drivers. Although ortho headphones which are big and ugly limits you pretty much to the BabyJecklins.

The Wharfedale DD-1 headphone is the biggest giant white ugly massive ugly retro ugly headphone I can think of which might offer something resembling not awful sound as well. They pop up on eBay not infrequently and insofar as I remember, are orthodynamic headphones.

These would have been my first choice, but he said black. Had a pair of these in the 70s and went through multiple driver units. Like every time somebody in the dorm borrowed them.

i love the koss 4AA's! totally ugly, heavy, retro.

(they fall into my, "so ugly, they're good lookin'" category)
